Default Impact of the Global Economy to Blu-ray Players.

Hey,

And this is a good news for Bluray Players.

Quote:
Blu-ray, a high-definition variation of the DVD format introduced three years ago, was initially met by a collective shrug from most consumers. Who needed another black box to connect to the TV, the thinking went, even if it did promise to play movie discs in clear, crisp high-definition?

But this year, even as the country moves tentatively out of a recession, consumers are buying the devices at a faster pace than they bought previous generations of movie players like the VCR and the DVD player. Analysts predict that sales of Blu-ray machines will be up 112 percent over last year, one of the true bright spots in retailing this holiday season.

Anyways, enjoy the read.

Funny, because I just read a snide posting on Gizmodo about how Blu-ray is selling poorly.

http://gizmodo.com/5426039/what-is-success-for-blu+ray

I just wonder how Blu-ray could simultaneously be selling at a faster pace than DVD did, yet still "Blu-ray, in its fourth year, only has revenues that are about a quarter of what DVD made in its fourth year."

Conflicting data interpretations is fun. I don't get what's wrong with Gizmodo though. The way they write about Blu-ray it's as though they're being forced to support it, so they attempt to write things showing its level of success but still do their best to make Blu-ray come out smelling like ass on the other end.

And if I may answer the question posed by the link to the Gizmodo article: Blu-ray is successful if it is profitable. It is profitable, therefore it is successful. The end.

edit: wait a second. Blu-ray ALREADY almost makes up a quarter of revenue for DVD as it stands now. How the HELL could DVD's revenue in 2001 come anywhere near matching CURRENT revenue from DVD?

It's true. Blu-Ray players are selling faster than DVD players did, but because you don't need to upgrade catalog titles, DVD catalog titles sold way better than Blu-Ray catalog titles are.

Blu-Ray players are selling faster, new releases are doing equivalent or better than DVD releases did, but revenue is way down.

Unfortunately if you want to call Blu-Ray a failure, it's easy to focus on the one of those three that looks bad.

The only thing impressive here is that they continue to do so in spite of the economy.

Now that players are in the $100 range, the sales increase will be even more dramatic. Once LOTR and Star Wars are released, the sales should equal or surpass DVD.

Probably because like the guy in the gizmodo comment likes to forget is that right now blu-ray prices per movie are almost 2-3x better then were dvd prices were in its 3rd/4th years.
