This is going to be the kiss of death for HD DVD.

This is bad news for the consumer if the HD DVD group is being intentionally vague on backwards compatibility. I'm forced to take a wait and see attitude. It still looks like quite a lot of speculation either way. My feeling is that this isn't something that the HD DVD supporter wanted because they believe it is needed, rather to take away a talking point for the BD crowd.

I suspect that if TL-51s turns out to work in existing players we wouldn't see them before this conflict is close to resolution (one way or the other). Another thing to point it is some simple math: 400,000 players x $400.00 per player = $160,000,000.00. Would anyone here put it passed the HD DVD group to replace/update the hardware if it meant $billions over the next 10 years?

I agree with this. Those folk want to enjoy hi-def video also but unfortunately chose the wrong format.

The real bummer here is that it makes the whole HD thing look bad....that is if the average consumer hears of it anyway. Things like this could scare people away from converting to HD in any format. Hopefully the maximum effect is to piss off some people who already own an HD DVD player and makes no news at all otherwise.

yeah i read this on videobusiness.com and no where does it say "not compatible" but they are investigating it...

I am confused about the following quote:
Quote:
Many Blu-ray supporters have pointed to their own 50GB BD releases as a competitive advantage to HD DVD, which to date has generated 15GB and 30GB discs. Sony Pictures Home Entertainment’s Oct. 30 BD release of Spider-Man 3 is among upcoming Blu-ray titles containing 50GB discs.
They make it sound like SM3 is the first and only movie to utilize BD50? I mean, think of it from a consumer perspective, BD50 sounds "too new".

But the article says that Toshiba admitted that it would require a hardware upgrade to play. They wouldn't admit this if they weren't certain.

Please. This is too funny! Most of us BD fans don't give a rat's a$$ about that stuff, or we're ok with it because we all know deep down inside that we'll either upgrade if we care, or just wait for a simple firmware update on the PS3 and we'll all instantly have Profile 1.1 (PIP) and Profile 2.0 (BD-Live).

All BD players now offer more space and bandwidth for superior hi-bit picture quality and lossless sound via PCM or Dolby TrueHD. We also have seamless branching and room for multiple lossless soundtracks and subtitles and extra features. And Blu-ray was designed from the ground up to be 1080p. Many BD players also do 1080p24 which is trouble for many of the Toshiba players.

They're sad because they know that their format doesn't have enough capacity even on dual-layer discs. Too bad!
By improving their format, HD-DVD highlights their own limitations to the point of making an informed consumer less likely to buy in now.

At least current Blu-ray stand-alone uses can rest assured that their current player will play BD 1.1 and 2.0 movies. It may not allow them to have all the neat new extras, but it will play the movie. PS3's have less worries as there should be firmware updates.

Being an early adopter to an incomplete HD-DVD format must really hurt sometimes!

I'm sure this has been said in this thread somewhere... but, looks like the HD-DVD standard isn't finalized :P this'll teach those HD-DVD'ers for criticizing our profiles...

The article reads as if 50 gig Blu-ray discs are a new item and not something available all along.

IMO this works to Blu's advantage. Think about it... A consumer who is wanting to go high-def reads the article. HD-DVD will be getting 51 gigs sometime in the future, Blu-ray has 50gb titles now. A little research and he/she finds out that Blu has lots of titles in 50gb, HD-DVD has only 30gb movies. Add into that the possibilty that the current HD-DVD players will not play 51gb movies when (or if) they come out.

More titles with more gigs from more studios that will work on more players.

More is better. Blu is the format choice.

Well, I posted it on AVS.

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...3#post11859683

We will see how scorched I will be when they say 'oh hes a BD supporter, this is just FUD', and I get banned with my 2 post counts over there lol. Maybe I should start a poll on how fast my post will be deleted and me banned for life lol.

This is a huge blow to HD DVD if this holds true, or Toshiba finds a way around the lens issue. Can very well determine the outcome of the format war.
