Plus the cheaper price makes it way more likely that I'll get some titles I may not have before. Definitely making a list already with all the January through March titles for that eventual next sale.

Who knows, maybe I'll even actually get to watch the couple I bought in the last sale before the next one. Nice to have goals.
The problem with that logic is you will have to wait till at least mid Summer which puts us at around 6 months away. We know that Criterion wants to release 4 BDs a month so times that by 6 and we have around 24 titles by July. For me, its much easier paying the pre-order price and buying the 1 or 2 BDs a month I want vs saving up for 10-15 titles and saving $5 - $7 a title but having to lay out $200 to $300 at once.

I can understand that. Personally it is actually a little easier for me to drop $300 at once instead of $30 a week, especially if I have at least a week's advanced notice of when the sale will be. Plus I'd rather get say six titles for less than a hundred bucks than get three for around the same price. But then I'm also not a buy it and watch it right away kind of guy, I'd love to be, but it tends not to be the case. Of the five titles I bought in the last sale, I've only watched one so far.

Plus I'm hoping the next sale will be more like March anyway. The first sale was in July, the next was in November. By that math, if they keep up with it the same way, March would be the next sale. So while maybe the March titles might not come out in time to fall in that sale, certainly the late November/Decemember/January/February titles will be enough to make it all worth while.

I'm also not somebody who is looking to own every title either. Just those that interest me, but like I said I am way more willing to take a blind chance on a title for $14 than I am for $30.

I'm happy now that I never got around to upgrading my old Paramount release. Days of Heaven is going to look fantastic on Blu-ray.

Time to do them. They want to bring out as many movies as they can. but takes longer with blu.

I still hate that Dillinger is dead isn't on blu. It had a great Janus run with a great transfer.

The important piece of news everyone should focus on is: In March, we are going to have four Blu-ray releases.

I agree BD should be day and date with the DVD releases. I want to see Dillinger is Dead but I won't be buying the DVD release.

Well that is where I am mad. I am going to buy the dvd release of Dillinger is Dead and I hate that I will. I also am not fond of the cover art they used. Should of went with the Janus poster like they did with Pierrot le fou.

So Dillinger is Dead dvd and Bigger than Life Blu for me. I might get the Malick too, but I am mad at it because it took the spot for Dillinger.

The Specs for Dillinger is Dead should read New, restored high-definition digital transfer in standard definition, supervised and approved by director of photography Mario Vulpiani

I would really liked to know the answer to this really.

First, it's a HD transfer.
2nd, if the reason for no blu release is because of 4 already that month, then why did they have a filler with Days of Heaven? And if they had to release Days of Heaven in March, then slide Dillinger to April with a blu release.

I don't understand that at all. I understand the 2 Kurosawa releases with his b-day and all, but they could of slide Malick's film to April and had a Dillinger blu if it was really a HD transfer.

Hope someone knows why they would do that.

Criterion has said that every single Blu-ray release so far has required work above and beyond the high-def master used for the DVD. Just having an HD master does not mean a BD is good to go.

So perhaps they were unable to get the Dillinger Is Dead master to the point where they felt comfortable using it for a BD release, who knows. They have said that they want to do as much BD as possible, it's just a matter of resources, so I have faith that there is a legitimate reason for each decision they make.

Hehe....I'm going to play devil's advocate here for the sake of discussion

This is going off my experience from various message boards outside of Blu-ray.com (because granted, we would love everything to be Blu). I'm learning more and more that the more I encounter Criterion collectors, the more I'm seeing that a) Not many of them have upgraded to Blu-ray b) Many of them are still hardcore SD-DVD owners, in fact, the more I communicate with these cinemaphiles, they are more hardcore in spending their money in getting director-based box sets or imported DVD's. c) I'm noticing more and more Criterion fans who are watching the films via Netflix streaming.

Personally, my feeling is that Blu-ray releases from Criterion thus far have been focused on showcasing a variety of directors and because of the high price point, how many are there who purchase Criterion Blu-ray at retail versus waiting on Amazon and B&N 50% off or higher deals. Criterion tends to be perfectionists and I'm sure just to make it right for Blu-ray, it's an expensive, labor intensive process.

As much as I take advantage of these online sales, I often wonder if Criterion makes their money back if people hesitate on Blu-ray releases until there is a sale.

So, my personal feeling is the reason why some releases are on DVD and not Blu-ray is to minimize costs and because they are dealing with multiple releases of not just the regular Criterion Collection line but also Eclipse and Essential Arthouse and whatever box set specials the have planned, schedule-wise, for a company their size...they're plenty busy.

---------------------------
As for the releases, Aside from the Kurosawa movies, I have not seen any Pedro Costa films nor am I familiar with Ferreri's "Dillnger is Dead" or Nicholas Rey's "Bigger Than Life". So, big question for those who are familiar with the filmmakers, were these films their biggest film and what other titles do you recommend? [note: I'm sure I can get the answer via googling or going on theauteurs.com...but for the sake of discussion, hopefully someone can chime in. Otherwise, we will get three pages of discussion on Criterion cases...Just kidding :P).

I didn't know that. So, the Monterey Pop Blu-rays were not 167, 168, 169?

Thanks. Yeah, hopefully others on here take part in the fake criterion cover art...hehe...

167 is the boxset (both)
168 is just monterey pop
169 is just jimi plays monterey

so I would assume criterion will do the same for Yojimbo and Sanjuro and list 3 different numbers
