That's exactly what the article was saying. Think about it, how many discs would it take to make Metal Gear Solid 4 on dvd? The game is going to take up an entire 50 gig dual layer disc. Not only that but developers on PGR said they couldn't do all the weather effects that wanted due to space limitations. All this is doing is proving that the power of Blu Ray and Sony is no joke.

this brings up a question i heard that MGS4 is not ps3 exclusive and will be on the 360 if thats true how can MGS4 be on the 360 if it takes up 50GB of space? unless its like a 3 disc set or something like that maybe more

If it does come on the 360 it probably will be multidisc. If you look at Mistwalker's 360 titles (Blue Dragon and Lost Odysee) and Square's future 360 titles (Last Remnant and Infinite Undiscovery) they are all on 4 discs. Microsoft has no problem having games released on multiple discs.

Just a side bar. When Snake controls the tiny Metal Gear he uses a PS3 controller. I wonder if they would change it to a 360 controller if it comes out on the 360.

Once and for all METAL GEAR SOLID 4 WILL NEVER SEE THE LIGHT OF DAY ON THE 360.

This has been confirmed by the guy who makes it.

MS is reluctant to bundle in any HD format until the war is over.
As big of a supporter as they are they still refuse to bundle it and that speaks volumes in my book.

Going forward next gen gaming will no doubt require huge capacity dics. I believe min 18-25Gb+. I actually see games going to the 30-40Gb range in the next two years so MS will have to do something.

BUT I do wonder if MS would ever drop a BR drive in their XBOX. I'm sure they will do whatever will net them more Money.

First, the Xbox 360 Addon is the cheapest way to get an HD DVD player. So if people do not buy 360s because the games they want are not on it, then there will be less HD DVD players sold. Second, this a prime example of how blu-rays size and bandwidth capabilities are making the HD DVD discs useless.

This game shows the short commings of HD DVD as a home media format.

Maybe this is the deal: The 360, even with its popularity won't be able to handle games in the near future. HDDUD is helped out by the fact that the many 360 owners can purchase the add-on HDDUD drive at a relatively low cost.

Blu-Ray can handle this so it seems to me that some of the best upcoming games may only be available on the PS3 (unless, of course, M$ decides to change drives, which I doubt they will anytime soon). Hardcore gamers, then, may end up switching to PS3 and thus Blu-Ray.

I wonder how many M$ fans would be dissapointed that they have to change the discs. The last time I had to do this was with Final Fantasy on the PS1. I almost feel sorry for them. Almost. Not to mention, wouldn't the graphics and sound suffer a little do to multiple discs?

Look at how long Laserdiscs lingered on. As long as there's a viable market, movies will come out.

I won't ever again buy a game with multiple discs unless the game is so next-gen to the 9th power that it takes 4-5 BD50 (or higher) discs to do it.

HDDVD will most likely never be a gaming platform.

The protective coating is simply not durable enough for gaming use (kids ripping discs in and out and higher rental volume).

The only way it could be 'adapted' is if they changed the coating to something similar to Blu-ray; however, this would mean re-tooling all production lines and, ironically, establishing that the same technologies that had to be implemented for Blu-ray be implemented for HDDVD production. The coating is the number one reason why HDDVD 'can be produced cheaper' (even though this really isn't true, existing lines can simply be modified to run more coatings as opposed to a new line to run a new coating... in the end the actual cost is negligible).

I'm pretty sure we'll end up seeing Blu-ray in any future Xbox. This war will be long be over before then; however, it's interesting that Microsoft has started to distance itself from HDDVD lately.

That's what comes out of the mouth of every developer Sony pays off. Seriously. The second Sony sews up an exclusive it's all about how they couldn't do it without Blu.

Because Sony paid Konami $20 million to keep it exclusive about an hour before their E3 presentation.

It's not a viable gaming platform because no systems use it for games, and it'll never have enough PC penetration to matter. Look how long it took PC to go DVD (until the point they were pressing 6-8 discs per game)

Your average game is about 4-5GB. It fits fine on a DVD-9. And if you're too lazy to change a disc 20 hours into the game...........

QFT. While the concept of DVD9 killing the 360 may appeal to some Playstation-only fanboys, it's not reality. How many games in the last generation even filled 4.5 gigs, much less 9? When I hear a NON-exclusive game developer saying his game would be impossible on a DVD9, I'll buy it, but it's not going to happen. The truth of the matter is that games are so expensive to produce these days, that unless they are handed a bribe in the millions, an independent game developer is going to to find a way for their games to work on both systems, so that they get both revenue streams and have that much more of a chance to make a return on their investment. There is a great article in EGM on the death console "exclusive" that I recommend everybody read.

A long time ago Peter Moore (former XBox honcho) stated that if HD-DVD loses the format war, Microsoft would release an external Blu-ray drive for the system -- a statement that was quickly denied by his overlords. I have no reason to doubt him, although in reality it would work in exact reverse of his statement. If HD-DVD started to pull ahead of Blu-ray, and the war looked to be tipping in HD-DVD's favor, you would see MS very quickly release an external Blu drive. Like...instantly.

MS is now and have always been interested in simply prolonging the war, so that optical HD dies on the vine.

They don't give a rat's patoot about HD-DVD, it's not the future for them. Yay 720p downloads! Ugh...

Maybe TL51 will be out by then

I was thinking on my drive down this morning why no one has tried to create a Blu-Ray add on from an HD-DVD add on. I dont see that large of a problem if the XBox360 has the codec to decode whatever is on the Blu-Ray disc.

Ok people, Lets all just stop here for a second. Lets all gather around the history machine, and look. We have all been around this same argument before. This was the same argument as cd's & dvd rom drives. And even back to floppy disc, peoplae always screaming, "what would you do with that much space, wht does anyone need that much space?" But somehow, we have learned to fill those spaces again and again. with different sizes and formats. Bluray mey not be a neccessity, but it will be accepted for its capacity. Cost of anything new is expensive, and somehow in this argument, over & over again, cheaper seems to be better. Why is cheaper better? X-box is written on dvd format. When dvd came out people said it was never going to take off. But those people were wrong, and the skeptics that believe bluray may not be needed for games, will see the way eventually. DVD is the last generation of recording format. And bluray is the next recordable format, with huge storage ability.
