So I have a retail unit in front of me, let me know if I can answer any questions regarding functionality, interface, etc. Unfortunately I don't have a 1080p capable TV or HDMI capable receiver so the information I can give might be limited.

hehe, would a man such as this have access to more of these fun little toys?

i know a lot of people are curious to the gui of the unit and the different options available. any info or pics would be sweet.

on the back of the unit, what interfaces are present? do we need converter cords (some proprietary connector to hdmi/component/etc) to hook the unit up?

does it upconvert SD dvd's?

100 percent backwards compatibility with PS2?

Because I may get Final Fantasy 12 since Circuit City has it going for $38 this week and I want to make sure that sort of thing is a nonissue.

God of War II and this Devil May Cry anthology I've heard about will be other PS2 purchases I'll be wanting to play on the PS3 as well.

I wish I had more
I'll post some pictures later tonight or tomorrow, I don't have my camera here right now.

Front connectors:
- CF slot
- SD slot
- Memory stick slot
- 4xUSB (2.0)
- disk slot

Rear connectors:
- HDMI (1.3) up to 1080p and 7.1
- ethernet (10/100/1000)
- digital optical out (2.0 or 5.1)
- AV multi out (kinda like what the PS2 had) up to 1080p except copyrighted blu-ray which will max out at 720p/1080i via this output.

Side: HDD access cover

Other:
- 802.11b/g
- Bluetooth (2.0)

All these are standard connectors except the ps2 style AV multi out which can output 2ch stereo+component video.

As far as DVD upconversion goes I have to try it, the manual doesn't talk about it. What's the best method to confirm this?

Seems like it, Socom3 is working on it with no issues at all.

You work for Arco? If the Blu-ray loses the format war, will a lot of game companies continue to supply/support PS3 in the future?

why wouldn't they is the better question.

obviously the player reads DVD's so that possibility exists i guess, but why limit what they can build by disc capacity

In the unlikely event that BD loses, the worst thing that could happen would be it ends up being a proprietary format for the PS3.

In other words: There's no "loss" as far as the PS3 and the gaming aspect is concerned, one way or the other.

I know you don't have a 1080p TV, but is there any documentation that states it supports 1080p24 playback for BD movies? Nobody seems to know for sure.

Thanks for the info!

OK, some more stuff:

- It doesn't seem to upconvert regular DVDs, I tried 5th element via both HDMI/DVI and component cables while the unit was set to 720p output. Both times when I checked on the TV the resolution switched back to 480p (see picture in the link below)
- The manual doesn't talk about 1080p24 it just says 1080p.

Some pictures I just took (sorry they're a bit dark, but this whole thing is so shiny that flash would ruin it):

Made in Japan? Woot! (crapping out XBOX 360s are made in CHINA)

K-Man, tech question. Can SACD be pre-decoded by the player and outputted in multichannel PCM thru HDMI?

Same for Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital and DTS? My receiver (Onkyo TX-SR803) has HDMI 1.1 inputs that accept 480i-1080p and 2 channel thru 5.1 channel PCM, as well as Dolby Digital and DTS bitstreams. I would be a VERY happy camper if the PS3 decodes SACD and TrueHD to PCM and sends it out over HDMI.

Awesome thanks! Can you take some more pics of the video player interface? That hasn't been shown much at all.

You might wanna flood the unit and its surrounding area with direct lights to take photos of it. Flash photography is for newbies.

According to the manual (since I don't have HDMI capable receiver):
"Audio from a Super Audio CD cannot be output from the digital out (optical) connector. Multi-Channel content from Super Audio CDs can only be output from the HDMI OUT connector"
So the answer is yes.

Yes, I believe that's how it works. Check the pictures there is one that shows the option to set the 'BD audio output format' to either 'bitstream' or 'linear PCM'. For SACD the unit internally decodes to PCM and outputs that to HDMI (2 channel SACD "might" be output to the analog stereo outs but I have to verify that).
You might have problem with the lack of 7.1 capability though:
"A device compatible with Linear PCM 7.1 Ch is required to output 7.1 Ch audio from the HDMI OUT connector."

k-man,
aside from some gui pictures, can you see if a portable hard drive or storage device can be hooked up and used through the USB ports?
