Default Any info on lip sync

I was wondering if any blu-ray players had the lip sync ability that is part of the hdmi 1.3 spec. Is there any way that this could be updated in a firmware update. Is this an option that you have to choose in the player or is it automatic. I have the onkyo 705 and there is an option in the menu that allows you turn on lip sync, but to the best of my knowledge the ps3 and other bd players don't suport this yet, am i right?

The Panasonic BD-10s have a built-in speaker delay for receivers that don't have it in there already

Since all new blu-ray players that are released after Oct 31 have to be profile 1.1+... would it prevent sony from releasing a new PS3 model without the updated spec? Would this be further proof that Sony is going to release an updated firmware that would make the ps3 a 1.1+ player? I can't see Sony releasing the same 40/80Gb models 10 years from now

All NEW players certified after that date

It has to be a new product. PS3 is still officially the same product

Blu-ray Showing Impressive Gains

Blu-ray Disc At the DisplaySearch conference held yesterday, attendees were treated to the latest information regarding the format war. Warner announced that '300' has sold over 250,000 copies on Blu-ray since it was released in July, twice as many as has sold on HD DVD. Sony also announced that the PS3 would soon be receiving a firmware upgrade to boost its Blu-ray interactivity functions.

On the whole, HD players have increased their market share, now at 5%, since August when it was only 1.3% of total DVD player sales. Additionally, HD players accounted for 27% of the revenue in the DVD player market. This trend is expected to continue through the upcoming holiday season.

To any of the insiders.

Would it be feasible or legal for the BDA to offer some kind of trade in deal for people with HD-DVD players, just to get them over to our side?

"Send us your HD DVD player and we'll give you $200 off a new BD player."

This is an amazing idea.

Damn, I wonder what kind of reaction Toshiba would have to this and what would the BDA do with all of those HD DUD players?

I do.

And one of Zee most interesting things about the above linked article by Susanne Ault from Video Business which I found was………… despite the fact that the Microsoft guru of interactivity, Kevin Collins was a panelist and made his usual comments, she did not deem it necessary to quote him.

Oh well, maybe he’ll get some press later today.

Well, I think it's an awful idea, no offense Martin. This will only help Toshiba finance production of cheap players. No, if anything, I would suggest an incentive based on more free Blu-Ray discs.

I think that is a great idea too, if it is timed right. Many HD DVD owners have doubt of the long term viability of the format (and we saw how many of them we're throwing in the towel online with the fake "Warner Bros is going BD exclusive news").

This would be a great "get out of your mistake now while you can", but I honestly don't know how this would be funded. As far as what would happen to the HD DVD players...well, a bonfire would be nice.

paidgeek, an additional request to the SCE team, if you may. Pass them along please?

So far the HD MP4 trailers, either downloaded at PSN, Yahoo or Apple.com (as far as I know) are in stereo only. Even when they are in 5.1 in their MOV format, the change of container to MP4 from MOV only allows for a 5.1 downmix to stereo. Apple has yet to enable Quicktime change the containers and preserve the original 5.1 mix - like the "passthrough" option for video.

So a few questions:
1. Is the MP4 playback on the PS3 restricted to stereo? (And so far, the same is true for .MPG/MPEG playback of AC-3 and DTS files.)
2. Can the MP4 playback on the PS3 be enabled for AAC-encoded 5.1 audio? The reason why I ask is that it would be good to hear the trailers in 5.1.
3. If #2 is an affirmative but Apple resists enabling 5.1 audio in Quicktime's container conversion, can SCE tech heads create a small container conversion program that runs on Windows/OSX/Linux that can create this conversion?
4. For those without HDMI outputs (IE optical digital only), can the PS3 do a Dolby Digital/DTS conversion on the fly for the playback of these MP4 files using 5.1 AAC?

Just pass these questions/requests along to SCE, paidgeek! Thanks again!

I think Kevin should have shown all those gratuitous violence clips like he did during the AVS Home Theater Cruise……… and maybe then, everyone in the audience wouldn’t have yawned and drifted off when he began to embellish the merits of interactivity.

I need Rob Tomlin or someone to post that funny character-thingee (that is snoring) for the benefit of those not able to attend.

I think I see better now, Penton-Man. A comment on how widely understood it is that this interactivity stuff is nonsense in the context of high def discs.

Just an update from the seamless branching investigation.

The Descent is confirmed to use the feature for the two different endings. I identified the main branch point (it looks like there may be a second one) and confirmed playing on my Panasonic player that both rated and unrated play through that branch seamlessly for video and audio.

So, I think The Descent earns the distinction as the first seamless branching title?

Now I need to get my hands on AVP and test that one

I think a trade-in program would be a great idea. Since Toshiba is subsidizing these suckers it would financially hurt them. The timing needs to be right and maybe bundle the trade-in with a copy of Spiderman3.

I tested it a while ago. Seemed to me that the bitrate meter from the PS3 would be moving around and then all of a sudden lock at 24Mbps for a short period. I believe there is a branch just before one of the predators kills one of the humans with a spear (after a net gets shot around him), with more blood in the unrated one. Seems like that was chapter 15 or 17 or around there. I use that chapter with the first fight between a predator and an alien for some demo stuff.

Not an Insider, but according to paidgeek that should be out sometime in '08. Apparently a lot of money is going into getting it remastered in HD. Never seen the film myself though.
