What is stopping a 3rd party from making a BD drive for X-box360? If I were to answer my own question, I would say MS would never allow the licensing because of HD-DVD - period.
But think about it, Xbox 360 sells rather well, and does have a nice assortment of games. PS3 owners here love it for the BD playing abilities, but I do see complaints that it lacks in games. I can only see a BD adaptor for the xbox 360 increasing the sales. I'm not trying to hurt Sony's PS3 sales, but anything which causes more people to buy BD movies is a good thing in the long run. Thoughts? |

because they are arrogant... rather than embrace, they try to one-up... only to (most of the time) fail miserably

Tron while I understand your position and agree with you, I don't think now is the time. Personally the 360 should be banshied to the lowest pits of hell for all the trouble it is causing it's users but putting my expierences aside I think in the long run this would be a good idea. The simple point is that HD-DVD needs to fail first then give those who bought and HD-DVD player the option of buying a Blu-ray one that supports both. My reason is that if companies continue to make players that support both then both will continue to sell. That will only make this drag on even longer.
The other problem here is MS actually doesn't give a damn about HD-DVD in the long run they seem to only be trying to prevent Sony from getting PS3's into homes just because of Blu-ray, because the odds are if they buy a PS3 for movies they also may use it's other features for gaming,DVR,etc. This would plant Sony at the fore front of the all in one media device that MS wants the Xbox to be so that it can one day fully incorporate Windows into every function of the home. As a side note the PS3 in my opinion does not have as many games (it has not been out for as long) but it certainly is getting better ones then 360 this year, so the complaints will lessen over the next 6 months. |

M$ is a software company, they don't care about hardware, they don't care about Blu-ray, and they most definitely don't care about HD DVD.
So what do they care about? Say it again: Software! They sell the X360 at cost/loss so they can sell games (software). The same is true moving forward, they want to own the next gen. video codec. VC-1 is great quality, and M$ wants it to become the defacto standard so they can make a dime for every movie ever stamped using their codec. They'll give it away, include it with Vista/XP and whatever else is necessary to get the royalties. They will then push HD downloadable services (HDDL) and own the company that integrates seamlessly with Vista to deliver HD content right to your PC directly using VC-1. The second they have ensured no physical optical disc format will take hold permanently, is the second they will turn their backs on Toshiba and walk away from this whole deal... Have no doubts, that the biggest villian in this format war is Microsoft. When almost every company had abandoned Toshiba, and almost every studio was neutral or Blu-ray only, Microsoft stepped in and seriously brought HD DVD back from the dead. They, as much, if not more than Toshiba, are the reason this format war exists at all. |
