My Earthquake Kompressor S-10 came in today. Didn't get much time to break it in before heading off to work. But the short time I did get to break it in I was very impressed, you could almost hear the sub getting better by the second. I can't wait to get it all broken and really let it thump. I have it on riser I put together quickly, I need to finish it cosmetically still.

Have spent a little time repositioning and breaking in the S-10 and all I can say is wow. It's just a fantastic performer for music and home theater. I think Earthquake has found a new loyal customer, I would definitely have them at the top of the list for a future upgrade.

Congrats !!! Glad you are enjoying your sub as much as I do mine. I really think it's unfortunate that this company gets overlooked as it does. I guess It's like a well kept secret. One of the things that made me consider Earthquake in the first place was that there subs are not gigantic, but you get enormous performance. People are just gonna have to experience these subs in person to believe it. I have heard a lot of subs out there & unless you want some big box in your room you will have a hard time finding a smallish sub that will out perform the Earthquakes.

Enjoy your sub !!! When it finally gets broken in all the way you will definitely be treated to some serious deep bass that will bring a smile to your face.

Question just got a MKV-12P

Hey all, i just received my new MKV-12 with the poly finish. I have been lusting after this sub for years and finally was able to afford it.

However, i'm not completely blown away with it. Hoping some here can help. For starters let me say it outclasses the rest of my system by far. I have an older sony receiver (not sure of the model and i'm not around it right now) and some really old (but great sounding) DCM Timewindow towers. I only run a 2.1 setup right now as i have never been one for the whole 5/7/9.1 setup.

On movies, the FEEL of the sub is amazing, able to generate amazing low slow powerful rumbles. However, I like to listen to lots of different types of music including rap/r&b. A few times, at levels I thought would not make the sub break a sweat, I have had it bottom out. It shakes things around the house, but the sound just isn't there.

I have it in a very open space, the living room opens up to a stairway going downstairs, a long hallway, and the dining room and kitchen might as well be considered part of the living room.

On my receiver, you can tell it what kind of setup you have, like if you have rears, center, sub ect. I know when I turn the sub option on, it pulls a lot of bass out of the front towers. I am assuming then that it is setting some internal crossover for the towers and the sub. Therefore i turned the supernova crossover all the way up (240hz i think).

Is this a terrible environment for this sub? Should I have gotten the 15? I also think I may be expecting too much. I have never had a home sub (other than a logitech z-5300 computer setup which musically has more bass presence than my supernova, but will not reproduce the same rumble) and I have always had a bass heavy car stereo setup.

I guess to sum it up, lots of shaking and rattling, but not the audible presence I was expecting.

Thanks in advance for any help you guys can give.

First of all, have you run the auto-calibration system on your receiver? Also, have you checked that everything is calibrated to 75dB? How about the crossovers of your fronts? Have you messed with the phase? Where is the subwoofer placed? Have you considered raising the subwoofer off the ground?

Driver King,

Chances are that older receivers may not have auto calibration programs.

lic niller,

A subwoofer's performance depends on two factors, placement in the room and calibration. Do the following:
  1. Put your subwoofer in the front corner about a foot or two away from the walls.
  2. If your sub has a left and right RCA inputs on its back, use a Y adapter (2 male, 1 female) and connect the subwoofer cable coming from the back of the receiver to both the left and right inputs on the back of the subwoofer.
  3. Turn the crossover on the back of the sub all the way up.
  4. Turn the level on the back of the subwoofer to around 60%.
  5. If your receiver has an auto calibration program, run it.
  6. If your receiver does not have an auto calibration program, buy a digital SPL meter from Radio Shack for $50 and run the receiver's test tones and calibrate the sound of each speaker, including the subwoofer so that they read 75dB on the SPL meter. There is a guide on using SPL meters in the receiver's section. It has a sticky.
There is nothing wrong with Earthquake subwoofers. Your problem is definitely placement and calibration. The sub should easily outclass the Logitech system.

I missed that it was an older receiver. Regardless, he should be able to mess with those other settings and calibrate his system with an SPL meter.

hey guys, thanks for the responses.

i do doubt that my sony has auto calibration, its a hand me down from my brother so i don't know too much about it, but i haven't seen anything in the menus. as well, i don't think i can set the front cross over, wish i could because it really pulls a lot of bass out of the towers when i activate the sub output on the receiver.

i had it in the front corner against (< 1") one wall with the passive facing the other wall about 5" away. (I read a review that had said to set it up that way for more oomph.) And I also tried it across the room between two couches with the passive 5" from the wall and the active out into the room. I will try moving it out in the corner and height wise as you guys suggest.

as of yet, i have not had the supnov level above 30-50% but i will set it up that way for the spl test when i get the meter and then adjust the output on the receiver.

otherwise, i have tried the phase, the crossover is all the way up on the sub, and my sony has 2 sub pre-outs so i used both of those to the supnov instead of the y cable.

thanks again guys.

nic
