i believe u are talking about the option that some subs have to connect the front speakers audio source (in stereo configuration, ie no X.1 or LFE cahnnel) to the sub and then connect the actual front speakers to the SUB out (L and R) so that the sub amp will take the source signal, divert the low frequency to the sub and then pass the higher frequency for the front speakers.

My current Polk and Earthquake subs both have y-splitters to connect the subwoofer cable. I remember when I bought my first decent home theater package and I was trying to figure out how to hook up my subwoofer and I asked the guy at radio shack for help and he was about as useful as an ashtray on a motorcycle.
