I'd be surprised if it works any time soon, because I don't imagine Americans rushing out to the store to buy 3d capable HDTVs, just to watch some soccer.

Avatar in 3D on a huge screen was great.

The World Cup on a 42" screen in my house doesn't seem great.

I won't upgrade to a 3D capable TV unless I get a TV that's 65"... actually that still doesn't seem like it'd be that great. Ok, 100".

I just don't see the 3d experience being anywhere near as immersive on a TV as it is in a large theater.

I have a 65" - and I think it might be "O.K.".

As for the ESPN channel - they'll broadcast it in 3D - you need to have a 3D capable TV and glasses - and probably pay for the exclusive channel.

I think this has "FAIL" written all over it. Might be fun for the first 30 minutes - but then who cares?

The biggest hurdle for 3D on TV is that most HDTV out there are NOT 3D capable. Most people had to empty the piggy bank to get their HDTV - and most people aren't about to spend that much money/effort just for 3D on a sports channel and the few movies that might come out in the next few years (after they buy their new 3D Blu-ray player).

Go ahead and compare the two if you want, but they're nothing alike.

You didn't need much to get something out of the internet, but you'll need a large screen to get any real benefit out of 3D. You can't just keep making bigger and bigger TVs, because houses don't grow.

But if you're interested, Panasonic will sell a 103" 3D-capable Plasma HDTV. And at $75,000, it's quite the bargain.

Sounds interesting. As toefer says it will be a while before the technology is adopted.

I'm a big football (soccer) fan and I'm really excited about the World Cup. What I'm not excited about is spending more $$$ for 3D because my 60" Elite Kuro is not 3D-capable. For now I'll be happy with 2D.
