If I could use my current HD-TV and my BD player to view some movies in 3-D I probably would. However, to upgrade everything to view something I don't like would be rediculous. 3-D will be a very small niche market. Heck BD is not even mainstream yet

so I guess following the "digital 3D is a passing fad" logic, Avatar 2 will be a miserable failure...

woah... I can see it now.
every time you lean over to kiss your girl, a huge explosion is going to go off, as to get you to look back at the screen. Stand up to go get popcorn, a gun gets pulled on the main character... is he going to die? That's right, sit your ass back down. |

I think it's something that people are going to have to agree to disagree on.
I think that 3-D can enhance a film, like it did with Avatar, or give you a reason to watch an old film again as it did with the re-release Toy Story 1 & 2 this past fall. What's great about 3-D films is that they can always be viewed in 3-D. And as long as Blu-rays are backwards compatible, I don't understand why people get upset that there are films in 3-D. I also think the enjoyment people get out of the films is directly related to their quality of vision, and the glasses/contacts they wear. Also, there are many competing formats of 3-D out there, and some are more effective than others. Many haven't had one good experience with 3-D and therefore write it off as a fad. I have seen over a dozen films in full color Digital 3-D now, and some films have been better than others. Up was a great one, Bolt was also. Avatar was the best. But I also saw Polar Express and Christmas Carol and hated the experience. Made me nauseous. It's something that effects everyone differently, and I have no doubt that it is something that home theater enthusiasts will be arguing about for years to come. |

I think most of the people here (including me) are confusing the current 3D technology with the 3D of the 80’s and 90’s. When I went to see Avatar, I was actually expecting the red/blue glasses! It’s not the same! There’s a big difference, in fact the illusion of 3D is very impressive; you feel like things are about to touch you or some others are far-far away -- it’s incredible -- go see a 3D movie for yourselves.
Now as far as 3D TV’s, my guess is that there will be a choice; either enable 3D or not. If in fact it’s so uncomfortable for you to wear those glasses then don’t and view the movie in 2D. |

Avatar 2 would be great. But what made Avatar great on 3D? It's size of screen. I don't think a 50" is going to cut it if you want to enjoy 3D you have to do it via projector.

Like I said originally; as long as they offer the 3D and 2D version on my discs they can push 3D crap all they want! |

I saw Avatar in 3D last night with my wife, and it was impressive -- some flat dialog but it was certainly entertaining!
This was my first current 3D experience and I did get the feeling that I wouldn't want to have it in my Home Theater. I just can't imagine all sitting on the couch with 3D glasses and enjoying the experience like we would in a real movie Theater. 3D actually makes me want to GO to the theater instead of waiting for the Blu or DVD and seeing it at home. 3D for the home is coming, but I think I will prefer it getting me out of the house and on more dates with my wife. Mmmm. Can't wait to see a good 3-D flick on my 32" telly! Floating heads in the corner of the room. Funny! LOL
And have you tried looking for remotes and drinks and stuff with those glasses on? It ain't easy! 3-D. Bloody stupid idea for the home! I'll wait for holographic 3-D imaging where the actors actually stand on my coffee table! |

While I think that 3-D in the theater is amazing, I think that it is too much too soon. DVD sales still outnumber BD sales but the margin is narrowing. Most of my friends don't even own an HDTV. I would love to go to my local theater to watch sporting events and more movies in 3-D but in the home market I have a hard time seeing it succeed.

If I may throw in my cent here. I think that many are kind of afraid of 3-D now.
I mean, look at it this way: We have just spent a handsome amount of cash on home cinema equipment and could finally enjoy movies in the currently best possible fashion, and then they tell us that our Blu-Ray players and HDTVs are not going to work if we want to watch movies in stereoscopic 3-D!?! or just have the resolution.... I have the Pioneer LX-5090, because I wanted the best possible screen available, and the Oppo BDP-83SE, and I am certainly not willing to upgrade my system, but it does kind of suck when people come over, just having seen Avatar, and ask you if you can also watch movies in 3-D on my set! ![]() Honestly, I think Avatar was better in 3-D than 2D, but 3-D has its own share of issues (check out some other comments of mine if you are interested), and I don't know a single movie right now that would demand a 3-D viewing at home. As a matter of fact, I don't know a single good awesome movie in 3-D (I mean story, character wise). Animated Pixar movies work better in 2-D for me. Avatar was a very, very costly exercise to show what 3-D is capable of, but frankly, I don't think it'll be a big hit in home theaters. It's a good reason to get off the couch and go see a movie in the theater, because the experience is different from at home, but Blu-Ray is sharper than Cinema, so there is no need to upgrade, at least not for me. It works for the studios, because they have found a new way to get people into the cinemas, to see sth., they could not view sitting in the living room, and that's fine by me. And like others said, it won't be very impressive on smaller screens anyway, and most people wouldn't want to wear glasses at home to watch a flick. If you prefer 3-D, good for you. If you have enough money, you won't have trouble upgrading your entire system to watch a few movies in 3-D. I may catch some flicks I am interested in in 3-D when I go to the theater, but that's it. The next TV I am going to buy, once my Pioneer dies, which will hopefully be a long time from now, will probably be 3-D anyway, but I won't run to the next store to get the latest tech, since I guess it'll take years to perfect it after all. Enjoy! ![]() ![]() |

Well here in the UK the vast majority of people are still getting their heads around the digital switch-over. A smaller number are getting their heads around HD broadcasting. An even smaller number are getting into BD.
3-D will do more harm that good. It will confuse punters even more and may even damage the fragile BD market. I have Beowulf on DVD and Monsters vs Aliens on BD and both look absolutely wonderful, particularly MvA. I saw them both at a cinema in 3-D and, sure, they looked great but they don't look any less great in 2-D. In fact if anything you can get more engrossed in the story because you're not constantly being distracted by the gimmicky effects. As I've said in another thread: 3-D (unlike surround sound) is fakery. Thus it's not something my senses can ever truly take seriously. For 2 hours in a darkened theater maybe, but not in the comfort of my living room! |
