Default A 3rd release for Amadeus???

I've been wanting to get Amadeus on Blu for a while but I didn't want the digibook version so I waited until they released it in the regular case (I know, I know, I could have just made a custom case, but whatever). So they released the regular case version in September but I never see it in stores so I thought eventually I would just buy it online. Now I see a third release coming out in a couple of weeks. I've heard of double dipping but this is ridiculous. What's weird is that it doesn't appear to be any different than any of the other releases. They're all the Director's Cut as well even though many people have said they'd like a blu-ray version of the theatrical cut. I honestly can't see any difference among the three except for the packaging. I know the digibook came with a CD and a small book but this new version apparently only has a slip cover highlighting the film's Oscar victories.

Sorry, just had to vent. I hope they at least sell this new version in stores.

The release coming out on February 2nd is just one with an Academy Award Gold slipcover. That is the only addition is intended to help promote and influence customers around Oscar month who would normally pass on films they are unsure about.

If you really want the slipcover or don't own it already, then pick it up on Feb 2nd.

Thumbs down Waste of money if you have it already.

That's so stupid. The least they could do is add some more special features. I may pick it up because I do not yet have the movie in any format, even though I love it.

I'm definitely picking it up this time. I was hoping they would put out a two-disc edition with the theatrical cut on one disc and the director's cut on the other.

Oh well, I love the movie so I'm looking forward to finally picking it up.

No theatrical cut, no interest.

Usually I like Director's cuts, but the added scenes in Amadeus do more harm than good.

Agreed. That movie and Dances With Wolves are my least favorite director´s cuts-- I wish there were more seamless branching options.

What's wrong with the Amadeus director's cut? The only scene I can think of that's inserted is the stuff where he's tutoring the Baron Harkonnen's daughter?
The scene that stands out to me is
[Show spoiler] when Constanze takes off her top for Salieri, apparently offering herself to him in order to help Wolfie. The breasts are quite nice, but change the characters in a way that I think detracts from the movie.

That said, WB has not updated or upgraded any of their titles (that I am aware of). They tend to just put new boxes and cases around the same old disc. I own the Digibook, and would seriously consider "double-dipping" if a newly encoded theatrical version was released.

This isn't a double dip or a triple dip. This is just a slip cover promotion. The 2nd release wasn't a double dip either - it was just a new case.

Yep. A similar "award slipcover" reissue of the plain-Jane Casablanca BD also drops the same day.

For both films, all three versions contain the exact same BD; the Casablanca UCE also had a DVD about Jack Warner (plus a whole bunch of swag), while the Amadeus digibook had a CD soundtrack sampler.

(Edit: I agree with the others about the Amadeus "Director's Cut" being inferior to the original. I actually "double-dipped" by buying the original version on DVD after buying the digibook.)

Exactly, this should not be considered any sort of dipping, it's the same exact disc. WB's not trying to get you to buy it again.

The directors cut does make more sense out of Costanza and Salieri's relationship. I dont think that it hinders fans from the film. Its an excellent piece of work.

I agree it does make how cold Costanza is to Salieri near the end of the movie make more sense and the same with the line "I regret we have no servants to show you out". But it does change the Salieri character. It make him seem less sympathetic.

WB playing up the Academy Award angle for this BD is ridiculous since it wasn't the director's cut that won all the awards. I'm not buying this movie until the theatrical version is available. Why they couldn't simply branch the director's cut footage is beyond me.

Thumbs up

I can't comment on which version I like better since I've never seen the director's cut. I'm off to Blockbuster. It's a fantastic film, I've loved it since I was a kid. I wonder why there is no theatrical cut on blu ray?

I can see why you're saying that but I have to disagree. Any time a DVD or Blu with different packaging is released the company behind the title is trying to use that to sell more copies. Movie/Blu fans like all of us know better but many people will walk into a store, see that the movie has different packaging and think that there's something new included in it so they'll buy it.

As for which version is better, I don't know. I believe the version I saw was the theatrical cut about 11 years ago so I don't know how the director's cut is compared to it. They don't seem to be in a hurry to release the theatrical cut.

I don't know what to do, I'd prefer a version with two discs, one with the theatrical cut, one with the director's cut or just one disc with seamless branching where you can choose which version to watch. I might just hold off for a while.

Question

Hm, I love this film, but with most people complaining about the Director's Cut,
I don't know whether I should wait with getting the BD or not.
I would want to see both versions anyway, so it would have to be a version with both version later on.
Otherwise I'd have waited for nothing if I'd also get the "old" Director's Cut by then.

But I have a question or two:

So the only version that includes a CD is the DigiBook?
Also, that CD, is it a new release or simply the same thing released with an earlier DVD-version?
Which might as well be sold as a separate Soundtrack, which I wouldn't know at this time.
I have the CD that came with a DVD-version, so I wonder if I'd only be getting the same thing with the BD-version...
