Have you contacted Emotiva for their answer? I would go to the source. Post the question on their forums or send their Customer Support an e-mail.

I posed the same question to Emotiva, and they answered that it would indeed be 250 watts. As I stated previously....

Your question had been answered (250 watts), i was responding to why a receivers impedence setting is available.

Well I would not necessarily say that is true. Some plate amps can be incredible. BUT most cheaper subs available utilize cheaply made plate amps.

And a very helpful response. All that setting does is limit your receiver...

If I had to use it, I would start looking for more power right off.

Please see this for further explanation.

Upon further investigation on this topic we have discovered that in most cases the switch is doing nothing more than reducing the rail voltage. Please check out our measurements on page 2 of the Yamaha R-XV4600 review for more information on this.

As you can see the measurement differences between the "low" setting (less than 8 ohms) and the "High" setting (8 ohms or more). This is the reason I usually recommend keeping this switch in its default "High" setting and using common sense when mating a receiver with inefficient 4 ohm speakers in large rooms.

All the "Low" setting of the switch is doing is stepping the rail voltage down so when UL tests the amp at a specified distortion level, the amp will achieve that distortion level sooner since it runs out of headroom more quickly than it would in the "High" (8 ohm or more) setting. This in turn generates less heat since the amp isn't driven as hard. You really aren't buying any protection for driving low impedance loads as you actually risk clipping the amplifier more since it can run out of headroom more easily. The switch is there more for certification purposes. The reason you don't see this switch on separate amps is twofold:

They typically have more heat sink area, and bigger power supplies and can better manage the heat
They aren't UL certified and don't have to meet the requirement

So I see that Emotiva has plans to release a model called the XPR-7: 400 watts per channel! Anyone have any info on this? Apparently it was supposed to be released at the end of last year? That would solve my whole 7.1 problem!!!

Default I ordered the UMC-1 today!

I've been on the original pre-order list forever it seems and finally my UMC-1 will be shipping before the end of the week

I sold off my old grear and have been without a processor for longest time now. I can not wait to have my theater up and running again! It was worth the wait considering nothing comes close (price/performance wise)... as many of you already know.

^ congrats! Don't get frustrated at first though as the UMC-1 is pretty buggy at the moment. BUT there is a update coming very soon that will give us a much better running unit.

Yeah its definately a beast (its built like a tank and has a power supply the size of a beach ball lol). It will be priced around $2500. Remember this is a very powerful amp and most people will be MORE than fine with just a XPA-5 and UPA-2 for a 7 channel system. Unless your speakers require this much wattage to reach the SPL your looking for, then its just a tad overkill

I just ordered my XPA-3! Can't wait to get it! I'm going to run my 4 rears on my Elite SC-25 for now and then eventually get two UPA-2's.

Thanks!!!!! Hey, quick question: can someone explain what "balanced" and "unbalanced" means? What are the benefits or detriments between the two? I got X-series RCA cables from Emotiva for my connection to my AVR which I was told is "unbalanced."

balanced is better. If you dont have balanced on both ends, then it doesnt matter.

Most of the time there's no real need to rip your setup apart and rewire it with balanced connections. Where balanced lines shine is in situations with long cable runs, especially ones carrying low signal levels that are subject to noise or interference.

Congrats! Waiting without a processor must have been tough!

I hope that the new software for the UMC-1 will be released soon! I'm waiting for that to make the plunge (I'm also waiting for Emo to sort out this FedEx import fees thing but that's another story).
