Casually, it means you're a stand-up guy; I think the more literal definition in Yiddish (and German?) has to do with being a person of integrity and honor. (I had a Jewish grandmother )

In case you missed the Hollywood Foreign Press Association Golden Globe award for Best Foreign Language Film………..

One of the few pleasant highlights, I thought, from what I thought otherwise were terrible picks. I'm only hoping that seeing Cameron pick up those two awards will shy actual Academy voters by making such a dumb move.

That said, I picked up AC and Cinefex today with the Avitards on the cover... It's a horrible story, but it looked purdy, and Weta/ILM/et al did a great job on the FX, and I'm interested in the nerdy Camera stuff.

At the least, it's elevated my expectations for how they're going to make the Hobbit look.

Don't count on it. I think Avatar is well beyond a shoe-in at this point. If ever there were a release more tailor-made for the Academy's new "Accessible-ize the Best Picture" campaign... Believe me, the voters will get the message that *TEN NOMINEES* is sending and leap at the opportunity to make up for their The Dark Knight "snub".

Meanwhile, I feel pre-emptively sorry for poor Up!, in the animation ghetto. Considering running times, there's probably more animation in Avatar.

My experience says that there are a lot of insulated and distinct crowds in LA.
I doubt many would know more yiddish words than Linda Richman would have taught all of us in the late 80's and early 90's.

yeah, I just don't know... It's irrational, I grant you, but I'm thinking that there will be some way of another film taking the top prize. I still haven't seen Hurt Locker (played TIFF in Sept, 2008, so it's taken its time to get props). I thought from the outset that Up In The Air or Precious would be the other front runners, and there's nothing else that they're really gung-ho about. I personally would -love- Basterds to take it, but we all know that's not going to happen.

In NYC you must go to Blue Ribbon... Super awesome place, a total Soho experience... The tartare is bad-ass...

If you've never done it, you've gots to try the Burger at the Meridien... It's a comically excellent place.

In Montreal, Au pied de cochon may not live up to its former self, but when I was there it was a sublime experience... Totally world class.

Meanwhile, Penton, if you want to blow some cash on food when you're in Van, I had sent you links last time you were up there... West if Sony's credit card is paying, or the Tomahawk in North Van if you are...

These guys have convenient curbside service…..which is extremely important in L.A. because many folks live in their motor vehicles……

The DVS track on the Brüno BD certainly evokes some disturbing imagery if you want to explore "interesting" versions of these. Perhaps less disturbing than the images themselves, but I suppose that depends on your powers of imagination.

I agree that it would be great to see these become more commonplace on US Blu-ray releases since they actually open the Blu-ray to a wider audience which should make it a higher priority extra in my mind (as compared to further interactive fluff that is non-essential). In the past, it seems like these tracks have shown up with some frequency on UK and EU editions, only to be mysteriously absent from the US edition.
