Well the description does say a "Civil war veteran", so it can't take place in the present. But if they follow the story as it is written, then they would only show horses and civil war soldiers very briefly at the beginning and at the end. The rest of the time the story would take place on Mars.

Unfortunatly that is something that can be overlook real quick. They can make him a veteran of the recent war, or set this up in the future with space travel and such. It's really easy for them to transport any story in recent time if they wish it. I think they just have a different feel if they are set in that period instead of now. Look how badly the new Flash Gordon look's when updated compare to what they could have done if left in the 30's.
