Default Please Help With Speaker!!!

Hey,

So last night I just bought a MartinLogan Encore TF Center Speaker because I tested it and it sounded AMAZING! I got it on sale from Best Buy for $247 and it was originally $499.99
I hooked it up to my Denon 1910 and it barely projected any sound so I got really pissed. I hooked it up to my friend's old Sony and it sounded TERRIFIC and REALLY loud. I JUST bought my receiver a week or two ago. I don't know what the @#^$ is going on and being honest, I'm just pissed as hell. The cable set up is completely attached right and firmly. There IS sound coming out, but you have to crank it to hear much. The receiver reads that it's there and says "DTS-HD MA" while watching my movie, but it's just terrible that it doesn't project but does on my friend's.
What the hell is going on and how do I fix this? Do I call Best Buy or what? Please help!!!

So have you already run audessy on the Dennon? How are your channel levels. If the center is at like -15 or something it will be quiet. And what level do you have to turn it up to get good sound? -10? -5? Is the Denon on night mode?

you could always hook the center up to one of the outputs for the mains and see how it plays there. Just as a test.

No I haven't run the Audessy, but will today when I get the rest of my speakers. I put it at -28 and it sounded descent, but -32 (normal listening) was extremely quiet.
How do I check to make sure it's not on night mode?
And is there a way to set a certain amount of power to the center channel and the other speakers?
I just hooked the center as the front right speaker and it sounded exactly the same, just with different noises.

Not sure you really have a problem. For movies I typically have my Denon (3808ci) volume at -10 or -5. How does yours sound when you turn it up to that level? If it sounds clean and undistorted I think your fine.

That's really cranking it though, isn't it?
And I'm nervous about blowing the speakers...

You can play it as loud as you want to but if you hear distortion turn it down.

WHAT?!?
How do you make it that loud with it being only at 30?
I only have my center speaker right now and should have the rest of my speakers to set up in an hour or so. This better sound good or I'll be pissed.

Are you talking -30 or 30? -30 is 30db below reference level. It will vary some with the sensitivity of the speakers but at 0 it should be a reproduction of what you would experience in the theater. Factoring in dialnorm, if I listen at -10 that is 10 to 16 decibels below reference.

@ horror4life, it is volume that will damage a speaker. That and distortion. You cant hurt it if the volume is reasonable and distortion free.

Just to let you know, that speaker is rated at 4ohms, that might be the problem.

Right now I am running speakers I built. You can check them out in the DIY speaker building thread. They aren't all the way done, but once they are feel free to drop by and check them out. I live in Painted Desert.

Yea it could be, though Denon claims that 4 ohm speakers are no problem. I know quite a few guys that run axiom m80s (also 4ohm I believe) on Denons with no trouble. If the receiver goes into autoprotect you know you have a problem.

Yeah, he's gonna have to jack the center volume way up and then pray that his receiver doesn't overheat and go into autoprotect.

So the MartinLogan Encore TF I'll have to crank?
And the receiver is in a COMPLETELY open area on my desk, I highly doubt it will overheat.
I'm getting the rest of my speakers within the hour (all Energy speakers which are the sub and 2 front speakers) I will do the auto calibration, will everything be loud without me having to crank it?

It will overheat because your receiver is not meant to handle 4ohm speakers. One speaker might not make it overheat, but it's very possible. You are still going to need to adjust the center volume higher.
