i havent seen this movie since the year it was released but i remember loving it. ive been holding off on watching it again in anticipation of the eventual blu-ray release. probably one of if not THE best sci-fi action movies of the last decade.

So what does this mean? Eventually the new 4k master will be used to transfer to BD and when 4k media becomes available?

Philip K Dick. Everyone thinks Asimov is the greatest Sci-Fi author. I like Dick. Well that came out wrong, lol. Movies based on Dick's works. Michael Crichton, a close second

Blade Runner (1982)
Based on "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?"

Screamers (1995)
Based on "Second Variety"

Total Recall (1990)
Based on "We Can Remember It For You Wholesale"

Confessions d'un Barjo (French, 1992)
Based on "Confessions of a Crap Artist"

Impostor (2001)
Based on "Impostor."

Minority Report (2002)
Based on "The Minority Report."

Paycheck (December 25, 2003)
Based on "Paycheck."

A Scanner Darkly (July 7, 2006)
Based on "A Scanner Darkly"

Next (April 27, 2007)
Based on "The Golden Man"

Films in Production

The Adjustment Bureau (coming 2010)
Based on "The Adjustment Team"

King of the Elves (coming 2012)
Based on "King of the Elves"

I like both authors, and Dick's material is unquestionably better translated to the big screen. I can't wait to own Minority Report on Blu; it'll go right next to Blade Runner on my shelf.

But as a big fan of classic sci fi, I'd have to put Asimov and Arthur C. Clarke in their own category as THE masters of the genre. Someone once compared Asimov to the Beatles by saying, "The Beatles didn't invent rock and roll. But they changed it forever, and for the better." Which is a fitting comparison. Star Trek, Star Wars, stories with robots and chaos mathmatics, etc. - these things wouldn't exist without Asimov. Virtually all sci fi developed after 1960 is highly influenced by his ideas, much moreso than any other thinker/writer.

With that said, most of his best works are virtually unfilmable. They usually don't have a central protaganist, or they take place over a long stretch of time. His best stories are more about big ideas than characters: The Foundation trilogy, I Robot, the Gods Themselves, the End of Eternity, Nightfall, etc.

Though a movie series could adapt his Elijah Bailey / Daneel Olivaw robot mysteries, beginning with the Naked Time. Star Trek fans would likely enjoy those as films, since so much of Kirk, Spock and their friendship can be traced back to those stories. The End of Eternity would also make a great film too, if they kept the love story and time travel mechanics in place.

If done right, these books could make great sci fi films along the lines of Gattaca or Blade Runner.

Yeah, I have finally figured out this grain thing. Digital grain, that is. The grain has always been there, even going back to VHS, but it's never been this visible due to the 1080p transfers. On DVD, it was there, but so washed out by like you say, low bit rate transfers, but on BD it's there in all its glory as such.

I noticed that in the film District 9, when they're doing the documentary style camera work, everything was in a clean HD digital video camera look, but the cinematic shots were slightly grainy.

Easily one of my top rewatchable sci-fi thrillers. I've seen it at least 30 times. Now, with the improved video and audio quality, I'll have reason to watch it another 30 times.
