But as a big fan of classic sci fi, I'd have to put Asimov and Arthur C. Clarke in their own category as THE masters of the genre. Someone once compared Asimov to the Beatles by saying, "The Beatles didn't invent rock and roll. But they changed it forever, and for the better." Which is a fitting comparison. Star Trek, Star Wars, stories with robots and chaos mathmatics, etc. - these things wouldn't exist without Asimov. Virtually all sci fi developed after 1960 is highly influenced by his ideas, much moreso than any other thinker/writer. With that said, most of his best works are virtually unfilmable. They usually don't have a central protaganist, or they take place over a long stretch of time. His best stories are more about big ideas than characters: The Foundation trilogy, I Robot, the Gods Themselves, the End of Eternity, Nightfall, etc. Though a movie series could adapt his Elijah Bailey / Daneel Olivaw robot mysteries, beginning with the Naked Time. Star Trek fans would likely enjoy those as films, since so much of Kirk, Spock and their friendship can be traced back to those stories. The End of Eternity would also make a great film too, if they kept the love story and time travel mechanics in place. If done right, these books could make great sci fi films along the lines of Gattaca or Blade Runner. |

I noticed that in the film District 9, when they're doing the documentary style camera work, everything was in a clean HD digital video camera look, but the cinematic shots were slightly grainy. |
