Question Disk Error Issue on Some BDs

I seem to be having a playing issue on some BDs on my Pioneer BDP-05FD. Most BDs play just fine but first Forbidden Kingdom and now the British release of the Bourne Trilogy give unknown disk error messages and will not play. All of these play fine on my Sony Vaio Laptop player so I don't think it has anything to do with the disks. I have installed the lastest updates so I am at a loss to understand what is up?

Make sure the discs are clean. It is common for this to happen on players if disc has even the slightest scratch. Give them a clean and try again.

They all are brand new and appear perfect.

I was going to suggest update your firmware but you seem to have that covered. I was playing my Bourne Trilogy over the weekend and had a problem with Ultimatum. It kept freezing at a certain point. But after givng it a good clean no problems. Small particles of dust believe.

Do you have the latest firmware update for your player? That often solves issues like the one you are experiencing.

Yes the firmware is the latest version. I updated it when it wouldn't play FK and it has not changed since then. I can't see anything wrong with the disks and they do play fine on my laptop, which I would have thought had a much less capable player.

you wouldn't by chance have been storing these blurays in something other than their original cases? there have been scattered reports of the protective scratch resistant film getting impressions from slight pressure being applied that make discs unreadable. such as storing in binders, sleeves.

Nope, in fact I have never stored any disk in anything but their original case and am fanatically diligent about handling them with care. Also, these are all band new and just barely arrived. It is most odd to me that the laptop has no issues with any of them. I would try them in yet another player if I had access to one. Can anyone tell me what software/hardware problem my Pioneer player may have?

I took the problematic titles down to BestBuy and they both played fine on a mid level player. This has to be a player issue.

it seems the pioneer website has a free upgrade to solve this problem, just go to blu ray section of pioneerelectronics.com and check if your players serial number is in the range of players that need an update.

Thanks much for that information. You would think that the support page for that product would have it. Sadly, mine is not one of the listed SNs. Support simply says send it in. While the image quality is great I would not buy this player again. It is very quirky and slow. I just ordered an Oppo-83 so maybe that will be less tempermental.

It's the Pioneer Player, save yourself a lot of aggravation and just get another one. Look at the new Oppo, or check out the Panasonics.

That's what I did with my Panasonic BD35, had a lot of problems with it not playing all the BD. So I bought a BD60 and sent the BD35 back to Panasonic. Now I have two very good Players.
