Arty and depressing (after the first 10 minutes) are not two words I would use to describe the film. And anything "can" be nominated. The question is whether it will or not. I think it is almost a certainty that it will be nominated, although it will not win. Foggy provided many great reasons why. Imo, the three reasons why it will be nominated are: 1) it's good enough; 2) there are 10 nominees; 3) it was a weak year. Not to mention, a major reason for the nominee expansion is to allow popular films to be nominated, as a means of drawing more viewers to the telecast. Of course, Avatar by itself will do this. However, because of the perceived "snub" of Wall-E, I think the Academy will make up for it with a nom for Up, which is a far superior film to begin with. Def would love to see it nominated, a true gem imo. |

No but I watch the rest of the movie and then make a judgment about the overall message and meaning of the film. The first 10 minutes are undoubtedly depressing (and a tremendous piece of filmmaking), but I find the story to be hopeful and uplifting in the end. If I focused on 10 minutes only of every film I watch, then the messages of those respective films would be drastically different than what one potentially would get out of the film as a whole. 10 minutes is irrelevant if the the other 90 are aimed at turning the corner. But that's okay. I wouldn't expect you to agree, since you make it a point to argue with everything I say even when it's correct or a matter of opinion. If you think the movie is depressing, then that's on you. I personally don't see it that way and I don't know of many other ppl that do either. I find the ending to be very beautiful actually. |

Did I enjoy Up? Yes.
Was it the best movie I saw in 2009? No. Was it one of the 10 best movies I saw in 2009? Eh, I suppose so. Would I watch it again? Depends on what else is on TV. I thought it was cute and sentimental, but pretty two-dimensional and predictible. In other words, it's just as a Pixar/Disney movie should be--a technically superior and well-crafted movie that opts for pleasing rather than challenging the crowd. It's solid, safe, uncontroversial entertainment. Last edited by repete66211; 01-26-2010 at 03:35 PM. |

It deserves to be nominated in BOTH categories period...end of discussion.
![]() I mean if mediocre films like Avatar and terrible films like Star Trek can be nominated I can not see why a great film like Up can not be nominated. Next.... Last edited by Elvis; 01-25-2010 at 08:46 PM. |

I agree with ya!! If Avatar hadnt of been in 3-D, I hardly think that it would of been the success it has become seen as it is really just a fairly average film, just with a big budget.

I love Wall-e, despite some hate on here for it, but I think I can understand why it didn't get it's nomination it was pushing for. To be honest, I thinkthe only other one I can think of is Ratatioulle, but I think that's a weak film to most of pixars work.

Fair enough--just glancing at the films nominated in the years of the Pixar releases, I think Ratatouille had the best shot. Imo, Wall-E was the 15th best film of last year. It just didn't click with me the way other Pixar films have, but I certainly don't hate it. |

I think Incredibles could have had a shot (I can't remember what won or what was nomiated that year).
Up is a great movie, and I think it should at least be nominated. Animation constantly is frowned upon in our country for whatever reeason (I suspect that it is still viewed as 'kids' entertainment), which will keep Up from winning, even if nominated. However, I thought the same thing about fantasy, and look what happened with Return of the King ![]() With 10 entries, especially, it would be a crime to not at least nominate Up. |
