same fans.. you would not want lesser fans.. PS3 has one of the best fan systems I have seen in any system.
Have not heard on the more efficeint cell, but I would guess they are still on 90nm... Backwards compatibility and hard drive size are the differences.. that and I guess the 80 has a game pack-in with motorstorm..oh yeah and the 40gb has 2 USB slots as oppose to four.. |

I think that the 80 has the slots for compact flash and memory stick pro duo. The 40 I'm not sure about.

Some people have been saying quieter fans, but that's it. The 40 has no compact flash slots.

I think that the 40 is meant to be a blu-ray player only. You can play ps3 games on it if you wish, but with only a 40 GB hard drive installed, you can't store much, unless you upgrade the hard drive to a 60 or something. If I know this right, I believe that sony has the following ps3 models
PS3 60 GB PS3 20 GB PS3 80 GB PS3 40 GB Four models, the 20 is gone, the 80 is meant to replace the 60 and I guess that the 40 is meant to replace the 20 so if all that is true then we have two different ps3 models down from four. There's something else that I don't get. It was confirmed that the ps3 would not upscale ps1 and ps2 games. Sony fans demanded this, so sony gave us the option to upscale games via a firmware update and now we have a newer ps3 model that won't even have the option to upscale so my question is "Is upscaling ps1 and ps2 games even important anymore?" or is the 40 just meant to be a blu-ray player? So basically it works out like this: 20GB - PS3, BluRay, HDMI, Emotion Engine (Full PS1 & PS2 BC) 40GB - PS3, BluRay, WiFi, HDMI, Two Less USB Ports 60GB - PS3, BluRay, WiFi, HDMI, Emotion Engine (Full PS1 & PS2 BC), Card Reader 80GB - PS3, BluRay, WiFi, HDMI, BC Emulation (70-80% of PS1/2 Games), Card Reader, Free Game (Probable to go away with price drop) Last edited by Layd Dly; 10-18-2007 at 03:53 PM. |

If i pick up the 40gb PS3 the only thing that would be missing is what was said earlier in this thread.
This is a pretty sweet deal if it would be able to upscale dvd's also which I am not sure if it can Six movies free also...even better. |

The 40GB is a great buy, it is perfectly acceptable for PS3 games as MS still only uses a 20GB HDD on it's Premium 360. With HDMI, WiFi,DVD upscale, Blu-ray playback, and full compatibility with the down loadable PS1 games (why do you think they left the PS1 BC on it) it's a steal. If you need the compact flash slots a add on USB flash reader can be bought cheap but your better off with a 1GB USB thumb drive to back up your saves anyway. A bigger Hard drive can be had for cheap, especially if you pick up an 80GB or 100GB drive which for most people is enough (most of us on here are just brats, my self included

It's not all that bad with the 40 GB model. Here is the breakdown for firmware updates, take 40 gigs, subtract 5 for the system software and another 11 for firmware updates, you have about 26 gigs left for whatever. Plenty for ps3 games. Between the 80 and the 40, which one would do better?

I don't suppose that two less USB ports on the front affects the owner in any way.
