I'll still be getting a little higher bitrate right?

With optical you'll get 1.5 Mbps DTS or 640 Kbps DD.

I have to get one - I want those advanced codecs and I'd rather send them to the receiver digitally untouched and have then decoded there than have them decoded in the receiver.

Any chance you can post a link to the source of that info? It makes sense to me because the system has the DTS Digital Surround logo on it which covers up to DTS:ES and DTS 96/24, which means it can play DVD-Videos that have a 24/96 1.5Mbps track on them, like Peter Gabriel's "Play : The Videos"
It should use the core plus the extensions, which is what DTS:ES and DTS 96/24 both do. If it was limited to just the core then it wouldn't be able to play DTS:ES tracks.

The hardware and DAC's necessary
It does have the DACs necessary. It converts advanced codecs such as Dolby TrueHD and SACD to multichannel PCM for output thru HDMI.

It's also fully capable of being updated to support DTS-MA.

There's no analog out because it adds to the cost and size of the unit.

The extras on this are in HD, and yes the pop-up menu is there where you can change everything on the fly.

Review from Home Theater Spot:

Quote:
The 18mbs AVC encoding looks virtually flawless. Compression appears to be transparent viewing at 1080p on a 92" screen. Honestly, I think only a person intimate with the original photography could state whether or not the presentation could be improved. But, this looks essentially like I remember it in the theater.
Video: 5/5

Just watched all the way through. The BEST HD PQ I have yet seen. If any reviewer tries to justify any review that is less than perfect, they are shills. Guess that Samsung player has life in it after all.

Hopefully they release this in Australia soon, doesn't the BD-p1000 internally decode DTS-HD?
As I sent an e-mail to Samsung Australia and got a reply the next day which had
"Our current version of Blu-ray player has codecs for Dolby Digital Plus and DTS-HD. These 2 codecs deliver a much better bit rate than convential codecs as well as support for PCM 5.1 Uncompressed audio. most tracks are written using PCM 5.1 uncompressed and a title I was playing with the other day had DTS-HD, this was connected to our AS-710 receiver and sound quality was superb."

They even has an FAQ that says the same thing on their website now,
http://www.samsung.com/au/blu-ray/faq/
So why would he say you need a decoder in the review for X-men isn't there already one in there?

Don't confuse DTS-HD with DTS-MA. HD is full bit rate, lossy DTS 91.5mbps). MA is lossless. So yes the player will decode good ole fashioned DTS. Just not the new advanced codec.

I'm sure that's a typo but it's 1.5Mbps, not 91.5Mbps.

Not quite!
DTS-HD can be 7.1 channels of 24/96 audio at bit rates of up to 6 Mbps (or 3Mbps on HD DVD).
That's a huge advancement over DTS.
DTS-HD MA is 7.1 channels of lossless 24/96 audio at bit rates of up to 24.5 Mbps (or 18Mbps on HD DVD).

I wonder if the DTS core is 96/24 on X-Men?

Sounded great. I just wish Fox would have a Dolby Digital track as well.

Why? Because most receivers can manipulate the DD track for dynamic compression and HDMI pass thru to televisions (my Sony XBR TV supports DD and PCM thru HDMI, no DTS).

I watched about half of it last night. Some of the outdoor scenes have a bit of grain but otherwise it looks fanatastic. I can't (well, I can) believe there are so many people saying it looks awful.
