Default Mods/supermods reading PM's?

Someone said something in another thread indicating that mods and supermods can read are PM's. I was wondering if that was true?

I'm not posting any deep down secrets or anything but some things I write in my PM's are only for the person I am writing to and I just want to know if mods read PM's or can have the power to or not.

I know moderators cannot, I would think site admins and super moderators could. Otherwise how would you ever moderate members attacking other members via PM? Just take their word for it? I honestly do not know though.

As for a breach of privacy, I am not sure I would ever log into a privately run site expecting I had any level of privacy. But that's just me...

And if I am walking in the streets at night I should be mugged? That's not a right mentality. As a respectable site, Blu-ray.com should respect its members' privacy, even though obviously we all know to avoid unnecessarily posting private information through private messages.

Good evening,

There is no need to question the integrity of Blu-ray.com!

I believe I made it perfectly clear that moderators and supermoderator do not have the ability to access your PMs.

There is no need for further speculations.

Yes, perfectly clear without explanation. I've wondered this as well, but I guess we won't know unless a supermod comes in. Anyone ever been a supermod on another site similar to this?

What? Pro-B has cleared the whole issue up with one simple post. Does it really need to be explained in detail?

In vBulletin neither mods, supermods or admins can read PMs. Admins can however see PM statistics: the number of "Sent items", number of "Inbox" messages and "Total" messages (Sent items + Inbox) and admins also have a link to delete all private messages. That's it.

Blu-ray.com takes personal integrity very seriously and we do not- and will not, read your personal PMs. The only reason for us to read/give out someones personal PMs would be if the police have strong suspicions about a serious crime, such as child pornography or similar. So far this has never happend.

This being said, you should still be careful with what you say on the Internet for many reasons. The HTTP protocol is unencrypted, so anyone (with root access to a routing server) between your computer and our server can theoretically see and read everything you do. The vBulletin database is also unencrypted (except the passwords which are encrypted), so a hacker could also theoretically gain access to the database. Then there's also of course the problem with that you mostly don't know the person you are talking to.

Regardless of what mods can or cannot (or will or will not) do... I think people need to re-think what privacy means.

Think of the internet like walking down the street... even if you pull someone to the side and whisper into his ear, it is possible someone could overhear your conversation.

Don't say anything in public that you mean to be private... and that includes emails and PMs, because those are only as private as you, the recipient, and any place in between.

Thats exactly my opinion...

So with a hack it is possible to read the Members PMs? I thought this might be the case , since i know it has been done on other Forums.

Could such a Hack be "installed" and then "uninstalled" after using it for its means? Would something like this be Protokolt? Is it possible that Super Moderators or Moderators have this "Privelege" to install such a Hack?

Those are just my thoughts and concerns...

Like members, Mods dont have access to the database nor can we write html code, only Admins. If iceman has come forth and stated for the record that he doesnt nor has he installed such a hack, then we should not question his integrity and take it at face value.
If you guys know or have ever dealt with the developers here, you would understand they are constantly upgrading and tweeking this site so its the best blu-ray site on the web. so even if there was a way, I dont believe they would have the time to exercise that option.

Only admins can install/manage hacks/custom plugins and there are only 2 admins, me and marwin. I haven't looked at this plugin, but I'm pretty sure that you could install it and then uninstall it if you wish, this is normally quite simple in vBulletin. However, we have never installed- and we will never install such a plugin for several reasons. The first being that if it got out it would hurt the site a lot. Secondly, both me and marwin have always personally been very picky about privacy and personal integrity and it would go against what we believe in. Thirdly our time is extremely limited and we rather spend it on developing the site instead of reading people's private chit chat... this is a movie/HT site, not secretinsiderstocktips.com
