What's with the Pirates of the Caribbean nonsense? Both films worked perfectly in my PS3. Including Liar's Dice.

HDDVD has just as many, if not more, firmware updates under it's belt than Blu-ray.

This is FUD.

This is true about everything not only BLU-RAY,You know why because Spiderman 3 used excessively BD-JAVA ,its a software and programming at the end you need to keep updated.

For example if we dont update our windows operating system ,the Spyware and Virus will eat us.Programming and advance programming always need update.Everyone who works in Computers and enginnering knows what update means.

This time HD-DUD are taking this opportunity just to attack BD and hide their failure.

I think they should include these updates on the BD's themselves...atleast the ones that take advantage of BD Java.
How big are they? Can't be more than a hundred megs at most
Probably far smaller.

He mentions the firmware updates that hd-dvd users need to do.

I do agree with the statement that we are all beta testing for HDM.

We have different Blu-ray players manufacturers so i think its impossible.on the otherhand,Maybe sony finished their programming and others did not what they will do stop their authoring encoding until the other manufacturers finish their programming and everything will be late.

Whereas PS3 does include always a firmware update in games blu-ray.

In all fairness though, I have the BDP1000 and I also have all 3 Spider Man films. All 3 play without a problem in my player. It takes a while for them to load (the Spiders have to finish filling in before the movie starts -- guess it's loading some crap), but after that, they are good to go. No problems at all. Audio is good, video is good, no sync problems, no audio dropouts. But I do have the latest firmware from a few weeks ago, so that may be the key. From what I hear though, the 1400 is giving a few people problems who have these discs, but I'm not 100% sure if it's true or just the "me too" crowd joining in. Irregardless, I think Samsung will have updates fairly soon after they are released. They'd be stupid not to.

BTW, that review is totally untrue when it comes to SM1. While it won't be mistaken for Pirates or Apocalypto, it's pretty darn good. S2 and S3 are 4.5 to 5 stars in my book.

Someone at AVS posted where this "news flash" originated from, and I went over there to check it out. It should be taken with a very big grain of salt, and consider the village idiots who started it. Don't believe me? Look at post #4.

OK, let's gather some data...

Samsung BD-P1000 is reported to have no problems on any SM movie - latest firmware (Badboi)
Samsung BD-P1400 is reported to lockup at branching points on SM2 - firmware rev unknown (a few AVS posters, including Robert George)
Phillips is reported to have no problems with SM1,2,3 (BigDad @ AVS)

Anyone else who can add to this?

Part of one's role as an early adopter.

Sooner or later we'll have to start dealing with firmware for refrigerators and washing machines.

Yeah, like that fridge with the TV built in.
...wait isn't that a samsung too?

Woo is on the money, of all the CEs it does appear that the Sammy units have many playback issues.
Hopefully they get their act together since their players (feature wise) are a good buy and when working offer really good PQ.

I hate to sound like a snob, but IMO the fact that the best Blu player is still found at Toys-R-Us is not a good thing!

Think of it from a marketing perspective.
The general public still thinks of the PS3 as nothing more than a toy.
(I know its not reality, but in marketing perception is reality)

We need serious standard format players that work flawlessly.
The new Elite player appears to be one of them.
I'm sure there are more to come.

We have to think big picture.
As much as Sony would love to have a PS3 in every household, this is not how we make Blu mainstream.
I'm sure Sony agrees or else they wouldn't make standalones also.

they should start including the firmware updates on the movie disc like they do with some games. That way alot of these problems can be avoided.

This assumes the BDA acts as a true unified unit with hardware CE in tight communications with software CEs.

Unfortunately this is the real world.

In this particular case, an Ethernet port for remote updates would work best.
