Yeah, just wishful thinking on my part. I just scooped up 5 I really wanted from Criterion (with the $5 off each title, it was actually cheaper than Amazon).

They are not considered OOP until end of March so they can make more copies the end of March is when they can not produce any more of the titles, usually it takes a while after that time for the WHSEs to deplete their stock, esp like Barnes, and amazon, com etc.

So it is a good announcement. We have decent time to buy the ones we want before they are gone.

Yeah, the DVDs (especially less popular ones) could be around a bit. But I wouldn't wait on Pierrot le fou BD if anyone is still without it - the BD speculation market is just ramping up and I figure a bunch of people will try to hoard the copies like what was done with The Third Man.

That's a huge chunk of the collection going out of print. It's sad to see it.

OK, I'm pulling the trigger on Grand Illusion. Now, the old dilemma:

Grand Illusion Criterion Cllection edition - $26.96

Grand Illusion Essential Arthouse edition - $10.96

So which one would you buy?

From what I can tell Essential Arthouse is just the movie with no extras. I rarely take advantage of extras, but that cover on the first one is gorgeous.

I know this is going to sound weird, but on those French movies from Criterion, is there a way to turn to subtitles off? I have seen many movies like this where the subtitles are always there and can't turn them off. I don't see subtitles in French

I have spine #1 version, and although I wouldn't usually recommend buying something for just a different cover........ the Extras are included too.... So I'd jump on it

Wouldn't you rather have Spine #1 in your collection?

(The thing I like about Criterion's Renoir DVDs is they often have a few minutes worth of Renoir going on about his film, which is the case with this one.)

Can't recall a Criterion that didn't have subtitles that could be disabled. (Kind of an awkward sentence: You should be able to turn subtitles off in most/all cases.) But then again, I tend to need them. Especially with the Shakespeare ones.

Do you guys think Criterion will rush and print as many as they can before March, or are they stuck with what they have now?

Damn I wish they would have released a BD of Tales of Hoffmann before they lost it. At least we can look forward to The Red Shoes release but, Tales of Hoffmann looks amazing. I love the commentary track also.

Thanks was wondering, I have a few French movies but release was from a American company and for some reasons the subs come on and they can't be turn off. I don't have this problem for Canadian release of French movies but was wondering if that was the same for Criterion. That as made more more careful in getting French movies and who release them. I don't need French sub

I don't care about spine numbers, but I knew before I even posted that I'd buy the Criterion edition. Being a cheapskate, I just hoped someone would convince me the $16 difference isn't justified.

Question Quickly building my Criterion collection...

Is Rossellini's War Trilogy a good blind buy? Cannot find this 3 film package on the site...

Yes sounds like they are really getting caught up, esp since mine shipped last week from an order from the 18th. I just ordered the Last Emperor case last week cause I ended up caving on purchasing the BD even though the aspect ratio is controversial etc... but I would have rather had the television cut included on a sep. disc.

Still shocks me they have that film which is so long with all those extras on one BD disc. (Last Emperor)

The five titles that will definitely jack up in price for OOP:

Carlos Saura’s Flamenco Trilogy (Eclipse Series 6)
Gervaise (Essential Art House edition)
Le jour se lève (Essential Art House edition)
Last Holiday (Essential Art House edition)
Mayerling (Essential Art House edition)

Why? Not many people bought that Eclipse Series above. Many Criterion owners do not purchased Essential Arthouse releases esp. since many were re-releases. These four titles were not released in the Criterion Collection. Too bad the deepdiscount.com sale is over...these were $7.99 each I believe. or $10 and $7.99 during the BN.com sale. I expect Essential Arthouse vol. 4 to jack up in price.
