Default Question about video input setting...

I hooked up my PS3 and Panasonic 50X10 (720p). I set the output to 1080p...then a funny thing happened: on the top left corner of the left screen, when I put in a Blu ray disc, I noticed it said 1080p - then it switched to 1080i...then back to 1080p!

I assume I'm watching 1080i? because if so, I want to change it to 720p. (Even though the PQ is excellent...but I understood that 720p is better).

Question Ps3

Well, if you want a 720p input signal, why did you set your PS3 to output 1080p ??

its probably trying to figure out what your tv is since your tv is 720p but set it to 1080p? your tv maybe able to accept and display 1080i. but i do question the setting of the ps3 to 1080p when your tv cant display it.

Why are you assuming this? Most, if not all sets today can accept a 1080p input signal (as does the Pany X10).

To the OP: On your set, you are "watching" 768p, regardless of the signal being fed to it. Set your PS3 to output 1080p and forget about it. You are not going to get an better of a picture by setting the PS3 to 1080i or 720p. The only time you "may" want to test input resolution would be from your cable provider. Sometimes 1080i looks better than 720p and vice-verse, though you need to test it for yourself to see if there is a difference.

the assumption comes from the op's post. he states his tv with the resolution. 99.9% of the time when people post that, its the max resolution that thier tv can display or think that it can display. so without doing an internet search i relied on the op's information.

edit: the ability to accept a signal and the ability to display the signal is different. my tv can accept 720p but cannot display it.

This was true with older sets, but today most sets can accept all input signals up to 1080p. Also, what one sees on their OSD (1080i/1080p/720p/480i) is the input signal, not what the TV is displaying. The TV is always going to display whatevever the signal is in the set's native resolution.

And not trying to start an argument, but if your set cannot display a 720p signal, then technically you can't say it accepts it. I mean, what's the point of accepting it if you can't display it?

i understand what your saying. i say it accepts it becuase it will downcovert the signal to one that it can display, it wont do this with 1080p. so yes, it does accept it. but i always had an issue with the way sony said my tv supports 720p. all lies....
