i will go out on a limb here, and call me crazy if youd like, BUT on here we had that we had purchased well over 1600 titles and thats a small number of people. SO my guess is that we destroyed hd-dud this week. Call me crazy but i think the numbers will be in the blu

The numbers come out this coming friday. It's my birthday and what a nice present it would be if Blu blew away HD-DVD on what is suppose to be one of if not their strongest week!

Only those with a time machine, and they ain't talkin' for fear of rupturing the space/time continuum. Tune in on October 26 when all will be revealed...

In theory,

People are still buying Blu Rays and HD DUDs right now that will count in this weeks numbers.

The new week begins tomorrow and we'll get the numbers from this week Friday near noon.

It's a very good sign that Transdfusers has slipped to 10th place on Amazon before the week is up.

I can't wait to here the whimpers and excuses from the Duds when UNDERPERFORMERS couldn't win a week for them. Should be fun.

I've already seen them suggest that half the sales of Blu Ray should be dis-counted because of the BOGO.

Fact is,.. this was the last dance for the DUDs. Friday it will be time to let it go. The smart ones (as if) will dump to Ebay and cut thier losses.

Lets state a fact here. There is only 2 reasons why hd-dud is still hanging around:

1) Microsoft is still pouring TONS of money into this sh*tastic format

2) People are either stupid or being misinformed at retail stores.

My room mate said he heard from people that hd-dud is getting more relases each week then bluray and they have more support than blu. I told him to introduce me to these people so i can slap them in the face for being stupid HAHAHA!

BLU FTW!!!!!!!

The only "chart" people are talking about is the average sales rankings (in number from top position, not number of units sold) at Amazon. Although a good measure to gauge general trends when the distribution of both formats are similar, it is notoriously unreliable when there is one huge-selling title (as it is this week). Transformers can go from #10 to #5 and double the sales (for instance), but that will only count as 0.5 in the average of top 10. The tenth best selling Blu-ray title can sell one unit and move up from #1000 to #995, and that will count as the same 0.5. However, in terms of number of units sold (what Nielsen reports, and the only number that counts), we're probably talking a difference of a few thousand versus one.

That's an extreme example, but HD-DVD can easily win this week while only having one movie in the top ten high-def sellers.

And I'm not saying it's a particularly big deal if they do. In baseball analogy, it's like a base hit in the 9th inning of a no-hitter with the score 15-0. Or in American football, a field goal with 5 seconds left of a 42-0 game. (Hey, isn't that like the Nielsen weekly score this year?) Or in Association football, a goal in the injury time in the second half with the score 8-0. (Or a hockey game of 21-0 or a rugby match of 116-0 or...sorry, don't know enough about cricket to come up with a reasonably outrageous score here. ) The losing team is still going to lose, they will just have avoided going into the record book as being completely shut out.

Transformers pre-sale ranking on Amazon hasn't been particularly impressive or long lasting, two, three weeks at most.

Blu-ray has had a large number of titles highly ranked for a solid week, including the POTC movies stacked right behind Transformers, even ahead at some points.

On the highstreet Blu-ray sells better, add a BOGO sale and you'll not only have enthusiasts picking up half a dozen plus movies, but average consumers picking up a couple on impulse.

powersfoss: I think what monkyman is saying is that neilsen tracks sales while the Amazon rank tracks ordered. That is why for Neilsen Transformers has not existed anywhere until this week but for Amazon it was highly ranked for some time. Even though what he says is true. I always got the opposite feeling from Amazon. In essence if what he said is true most movies would have god awful ranking on Amazon when they come out (since they were so high during preorder. My guess is that preorders either don't have a decay factor or the decay factor is extremely long compared to real sales.

i.e. a preorder title can have a very high rank for a long time and does not seem to drop. This looks to imply that it is artificially maintained (i.e. it does not drop because no one preordered it for a few hours/minutes) on the other hand once a title is out it starts fluctuating again and go up or down several spots as time moves.

In essence I think what he is saying is that the preorders don’t count on Amazon and the high ranking is only for the titles ordered during the week. If that is true, then there are many titles that shipped but are overlooked. But let’s face it, on Tuesday, or Monday or Sunday or when ever these titles started shipping the amazon ranking did not go to infinity and not have continued where they were.

If Transformers fails then the HD DVD fanboys will start saying: Just you wait, we will win when Shrek the Third is out! And then it will be: We'll have a comeback once Bourne is out! And it will be like this for eternity.

I gotta say, I think the BOGO sales are a much more consumer-friendly weapon in the format war than paying a studio to stop releasing titles for the other side. Bragging rights are one thing, but my two PotC movies just arrived, for less than $30. I'm sure all the studios are watching Transformers/BOGO sales this week, I wonder if a surprise there could sway someone...

Anyway, in a vain, desperate attempt to stay on-topic, has the BDA been courting some of the American anime studios? I know Funimation's already chosen blu-ray (and even released a DBZ movie that few wanted), but there's a lot of potential out there. Especially with Geneon dead, Sony could probably easily license a lot of titles that would benefit quite nicely from blu-ray (Last Exile springs to mind).

I think Warner Brothers is already worried about HD DVD, and would be even more worried about HD DVD if it lost the Transformers week. Perhaps so worried, that they think it will be pointless to continue supporting a dying format, a format gasping for its' last breath of air before it is buried.

(bold mine)

If that is true, then having 7-8 BDs in the top 10 amzn rankings during the week (thanks to BOGO) could nullify the 2-3 weeks of pre-order sales, assuming those sales were about the same daily volume as those during actual Transformers week.

We can hope at least. I have faith that the people in charge at Warner will be competent enough realize the point you have made.

Cheers,
