This would probably be a better, or more interesting question if it weren't simply a matter of a yes or no opinion...
It would be interesting to see numbers and to know just how many people have adopted BD and how many potentially WILL adopt BD. Or what % of homes it will eventually occupy. The latest info I could find said 17 million players in homes in the USA. How many DVD players are in homes now? Will BD ever reach that number? Also, maybe it should be phrased, what can YOU do to make that number go up. As you guys found buying one for your sister might be a waste. But showing off your system to friends and co-workers is probably a good way to get some people to buy a blu-ray player. I think think this Xmas will see a lot of people buying their first blu-ray player. They will be $100 and maybe under hopefully. Maybe there will be some added features like netflix or hulu streaming on players under $150 as I think people are starting to take note of these types of added features. They need to bring down the prices of BD (obviously). Especially for rentals. My locals stores rent them for $4 or $5 which is twice what a SD disc costs to rent. Titles - they need a lot more titles, the selection currently sucks ass. But I've said that on here from time to time for the past few years. I looked at my collection the other day to see if there was any DVDs I could get rid of and there were only 3 or 4 out of 100 that a BD has been released for. It seems like the studios should speed up releasing titles now that BD adoption seems to have a lot of momentum. Don't see why they don't release a bare-bones version first and a full-features version later (if that is what is holding them up - really why don't they release more titles?) It also doesn't seem like backwards compatibility is a compelling reason to buy a new piece of hardware. Super Audio CD was backwards compatible with CD but people did not perceive the need to have something better than CD so they didn't buy in to it. BD is just enough of an improvement though that I think people with HD sets can justify it once they see the difference. My short answer would be NO, but this Christmas will be the time for the masses to buy in to BD. |
