Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas 5/5
This may be the best movie at capturing the book it is based on that I have ever seen. The events, the narration, the dialogue, and most importantly, the spirit of the book, are reproduced here flawlessly. And the trippy visuals are spectacular, as one would expect from a T. Gilliam effort. The performances of Depp and Del Toro in the principle roles are completely over-the-top, and outstanding. I can see how this movie would baffle people who haven't read the book, and/or ever dropped acid. ![]() One humorous note: it took me three attempts to stay conscious for the entire film. Not because it is boring, because for some reason I was compelled to drink too much the first two times. ![]() |

Sukiyaki Western Django
Watched this on a cable movie channel last night and loved it! Hadn't heard of it before, and didn't know what to expect out of a Japanese western film. It was a lot of fun, very stylized set in a Japanese western Nevada world. I really liked the way they integrated the two influences, for example wearing old style western overcoats and cowboys hats but with oriental designs and great colours while carrying a Samurai sword and a revolver. I was surprised to see Quentin Tarantino show up half way through the movie, and to later find out it is written and directed by Takashi Miike. I placed my order on amazon today for the blu, real cheap only $7.99. 8/10 |

Ah, gotcha! I don't think you were being presumptious at all. I know that generally I'm much more supportive of foreign and classic films, but I've always been a big fan of James Cameron. I think Aliens is the finest film in the action genre, Titanic still amazes me, and The Abyss is wonderful film despite lacking a clear focus. The Terminator films he did were also pretty good and I think True Lies is a very good and entertaining action film. So, I'm def a Cameron fan. My reluctance about the film is that I thought it looked too cartoonish from the trailers. However, I reserved judgment until seeing it (as all ppl should) because I really had a feeling that he'd come through, like he has on his previous films. While I only give it three stars (out of four) and think it's either his fourth or fifth best film (Aliens, Titanic, and The Abyss being top 3, and probably T2 being fourth), I still thought it was entertaining and engaging. Dialogue was characteristically weak and there wasn't much depth presented for the characters, but I still thought it was a good but not great overall film. The 3D aspect is what made it so enjoyable, because of that feeling of immersion. Like Ebert, I'm generally hesitant when it comes to 3D because I think a lot of times its used ineffectively and to as a gimmick (example--an axe being thrown at the screen). However, in this film I never once thought it was a gimmick, but a way to feel immersed in this highly detailed and creative world. The sense of depth was astonishing and I thought on a 3D technical level, it far exceeded previous attempts and films. |

Sin Nombre is an absolutely incredible film. One of the best directorial debuts in years with great cinematography. I can't even convey how pissed I am that the UK version, released last week I believe, is region B locked. |
