The last Game console I owned was an atari 2600 as a Kid the latest one i've used was an SNES so never used a ps 3 but i get the main conversation here is the ps3 vs oppo and other players it seems to me the new players from sony close that gap for a good price range. P.S. I own a BDP-S570 and think it's a nice solid player with a nice solid set of networking features Plus it works with 80211N in the 5Ghz range e.g. compatible with apple airport. I like using the PS3 BD remote. It doesn't cost that much and it has an advantage: if you lose it or break it, you can just get another one easily. Same if you prefer using the regular controller.
Another PS3 advantage is its big base of customers. A company may discontinue support for a SA after several years but the PS3 will have decades of support. |

Im done with this point less argument, i chose to spend almost a 1,000 bucks on PS3's knowing its capabilities, my next door buddy has a oppo, and its not what everyone makes it to be for the price they charge.
Just know that in lDlisturb3d's house you will find an a2-300 sub and 3 ps3's ![]() |

Just the build quality of the 83 alone is better than most BD players i've seen so far in the $150 to $500 price point. Its got a nice metal front compared to most brands who use plastic and to me that means well built. Fully lit remote and thats very usefull! The packing job alone of the Oppo products put most brands to shame. Double boxed, nice amount of protective foam... I know you might think "so what", well I like knowing my unit can be shipped anywhere and will arrive in one piece. And then theres the little extras within the packing (the Oppo bag, Oppo box for remote, batt, cables etc...), its a class touch. The 83 comes loaded with an HDMI cable, the Spears & Munsil calibration Blu-ray, an Audio calibration disc. The Audio disc also includes some SACD material so that most of us who never heard SACD music can get a taste of what it is... and its pretty damn sweet! The 83's tweaking options can be done on the fly without exiting the movie, you can tweak each aspect of the image for better calibration, thats also nice touch when you want to change a few things. Not to mention the 83 will upconvert your regular DVD's better than most units in that price range. And if you own a lot of DVD's, thats a huge plus right there. Bottom line, you get what you pay for. So comparing the 83 to a standard $99 player to me is like apples and oranges. Last edited by 4x12; 06-10-2010 at 08:47 PM. |

Thanks 4x12, that is actually quite useful information. + Rep to you! I like the idea of making adjustments on the fly. I'm not going to buy one as I'm happy with my PS3 but that is pretty damn cool for somebody like me who is anal about tweaking audio and video settings.

Since I own a lot of DVD's and plan on buying more, the 83's great upconverting made it an purchase. That and the fact that I now put less play time on the PS3 and that means no early grave for it. I would hate for the PS3 to die on my and I lose all those damn DL's i got. |

I really like the PS3 also. I own two (bedroom and living room) and the Oppo 83. I wouldn't part with my PS3's. At $299 its a great All-In-One unit thats pretty damn hard to beat.
Great gaming console Wi-Fi Great audio 120g HD Updating firmware is a snap Streaming from PC is a snap (was before I upgrade to Win7english ![]() Web access Nice sleek look... Need I go on? It can be a little loud at times but seriously, while playing a movie/game at reference level do you actually notice it? I find the remote decent... aint the best but far form the worst. Overall, its a solid system. |

We are talking about blu-ray player capabilities, not the "extra" things it can do, how it's packaged and the extra items they provide. Those are just talking points and have nothing to do with a blu-ray player. The OP question: "Is the PS3 Still The Best Blu-ray Player?" In regards to blu-ray playback, the answer is no since a blu-ray player is NOT about gaming, WiFI & streaming content. *Streaming content is not a blu-ray requirement but a new feature added to entice consumers to purchase blu-ray players. A $99 player projects a blu-ray picture as good as a $500 player. There might be a slight better PQ on a $500 but not enough that most will notice or justify a 5x cost increase. The OPPO is a great player if you require the HD audio capability and have a 100" or larger screen for upconverting DVD's. Other than that, a $99 will upconvert DVD's just fine on a screen less than 100" with a noticeable PQ improvement over a standard DVD player. |

But in all honesty, I've purchased enough stuff in my 35yrs of living to know that theres always a reason why something is $99 compared to a similar product at $299 or $499. A good example of this, about 4 years ago I purchased a cheapo brand VCR from Canadian Tire because my $700 Sony died on me after almost 10yrs of hard work. That cheapo VCR died less then a year after I got it. By then DVD's where selling crazy cheap and I was able to get another good Sony VCR at $250 and that one is still being used by my mother on a daily basis for the kids... its about 3-4 years old now. So again, how long will this $99 BDP last you? weeks? months? maybe a year? After that your back here asking the same questions 6months later because you need to purchase a new player. I'm a stong beleiver that you ALWAYS get what you pay for... no matter what it is... let it be cheap hookers, cheap guitars or cheap electronics. And unless you don't really care (or arent picky) about the image your looking at you will notice some type of PQ difference on screens smaller than 100". When I first got the Oppo I tested its DVD upconverting next the the PS3 with Starwars III ROTS (each player had its own DVD since I own both releases) and flipped between each unit and there was an improvment on the Oppo. Not a night and day difference, but If I can spot it between the PS3 and Oppo, you can bet your hard earned cash the difference are visible between a $99 unit and something higher. But the end decision is on the buyer... I wouldn't buy a $78-$99 BDP as my main player for many reasons. |

![]() I own both an Oppo BDP-80 and a PS3 slim (I also owned a 40g phat which I replaced with the current slim) and between the 2 I would say the Oppo is a better Blu Ray player. It loads slightly faster, its whisper quiet, and its easy to mod ($25 and 5 minutes later and I have a region free DVD/BD machine that can handle any disc, Pal or NTSC). The PS3 is still a fine machine and for the price you get a lot of bang for your buck but to compare people who support Oppo (a reliable, top notch company whose guts can be found in 15k BD players and are FAIRLY priced) to people who support Bose (a company who make ok sounding products that are POORLY priced and come with some of the worst QC) is a bit misinformed... |
