Default Nvidia Fermi, thread of being delayed over, and over - Reviews out!!!

So Fermi, GF100, GTX480 or what ever you want to call it is coming out in March.

What do we know about it?

It's big, and powerful. Also very hot and has terrible yields so doesn't clock well. Pricing is said to be anywhere from $399-599 (more expensive than a games console!) for the single chip and upwards of $649 for a dual chip.

Will it be worth it?

Probably, yes. What Nvidia have done is nothing short of revolutionary and have taken a lot of pain for it. They have in essence created a 'quad core' GPU with 128 SPs in each core. Cores can be added and removed easily without rearchitecting the chip. So we will find out in 12-18 months how well Nv do from this.

Is it going to be better than ATi's chips?

Depends on which one, it will be significantly faster than 5850 and 5870, but not the 5970 which is where it will be priced to compete.

I'll try and keep the OP updated with developments as more info is released...

I have been critical of Nvidia on PC gaming forums, but I'm willing to reconsider my stance, depending on what's announced in March. Retailers are still asking (and commanding) a premium on ATI's HD 58xx cards, and there's nothing on the PC front that demands an immediate upgrade, so I'll wait to see what's revealed next month.

I only hope that availability will be better and competition will drive down the price of these ultra high end DX11 cards.

I've been wanting to get a 5970 since launch but couldn't due to availability. Now that fermi is so close I've decided just to wait until some benchmarks are released. I might still end up with a 5970 if the baby seal killing rumors of Fermi's power consumption are true.

And I can't wait to torture either of those beasts with folding@home.

I think my GTX 275 will last me another couple years. I never waste my money on new or top o line cards. I paid $200 for a new GTX 275 four or five months ago and it handles every game I have with ease.

.....for now, till the DX11 games start rolling out, beginning with Activision's post-apocalyptic FPS Metro 2033 in mid-March (screenshot below).

Metro 2033 is March 16th.

Nvidia's GTX470 & GTX480 aka "Fermi" is finally (after a six month delay) scheduled to be released on March 26th.

The 470 is rumored to have comparable performance to ATI's 5870 with a rumored MSRP of $299. TweakTown is reporting they have confirmed the price.

The 480 is said to be faster then the 5870 but slower then ATI's duel GPU 5970 with a price estimated to be in the neighborhood of $700

SaberPC has the GTX480 up for pre-order at $679.99

About time. Too bad I'm strapped for cash and just bought a GTX 285. And the RRP in Australia for the GTX 470 will probably be in the $400-$600 range

I just upgraded to the GTX285 w/ a corsair 750W. Very powerful although I'm kinda pissed I didn't get something more powerful. The 750W won't support SLI'd 285s

Toms Hardware.com has an awesome preview article on Fermi that's worth a read.

http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/...x-11,2536.html

Until reviewers get there hands on Fermi no one will truly know how power demanding Fermi is with how much performance in return. Toms Hardware is saying Fermi will run very hot and consume lots of power. ATI's 5850 is recommended to have at least a 700 watt power supply, supposedly Nvidia is recommending the GTX470 have at least 50 watts more at 750watts minimum. The GTX480 is going to be the one to watch out for, a single GPU card that competes with ATI's duel GPU 5970, you may need a 2nd job just to afford that card and a 3rd job to pay the electric bill to keep it running.

Embargo over in one day!!!!

I've seen a performance preview. It looks good, but not spectacular. Pricing is reasonable for the performance premium, but it doesn't look like ATi will need to respond with price drops of their own as the performance isn't that much higher.

The GTX470/480 looks to be about 10% faster then ATI's comparable cards for 30% more $$$. Doesn't look like there will be an ATI price drop any time soon... unfortunately.

ATI happy with current pricing on Radeon cards despite GTX 470/480 launch

Can't say I'm too surprised by AMD's stance on the issue of pricing. Although I'm still anxious to read the reviews (and there will be many over the next 24 hours), I suspect that the benchmark results will be fairly similar across the board, and that any Fermi recommendations may come with a slight disclaimer (based on its price/performance ratio). For a longtime ATI user such as myself, I don't think Fermi will make me an Nvidia convert anytime soon; nevertheless, I'm looking forward to the reviews.

I was hoping for a price break on an HD 5850 or 5870; looks as if I'll have to wait a bit longer.
