Default Help! I can't connect it to the internet!

I am really stuck.

I got a long ethernet cable, and stuck it in my SONY BDP-N460

ran it to my router (Netgear WGR614) which my iMac uses, and my girlfriends laptop uses (and my old PC, when its turned on, uses) without issue.

But I ran the internet settings part of my Bluray player and it failed to connect.

The wire (straight wire, cat5e) is connected. I tried manually entering IP, DNS, etc after the AUTO setup failed.

But it didn't work. What am I missing? Is there some way to error check this?

Any advice would be great.

Try giving it some time, leave it plugged in for a while. I hadnt had any experience with a plugged in ethernet cable for years because of wi-fi, but last weekend I housesat for a friend. It took my laptop like a half hour to get used to her ethernet, and when I left it took her even longer to use hers.

Waited a few days, still not working.

I'm very frustrated and I am not even sure where to begin checking. How do you troubleshoot something like this?

Have you tried connecting one of your other devices to the same cable to make sure it isn't a bad cable or bad port on your router.

If you use to routers control panel and check the DHCP list (the name of this varies with routers), does the N460 show up?

Is your router configured as a DHCP server?

If none of this works, you may have a defective unit. My set-up is much more complicated and worked without a hitch (ATT DSL router connected via ethernet to a HomeLineAV device with a HomelineAV router at the other end connected to my N460 with an ethernet cable - Universal's "pocket blu" application doesn't recognize my player, but it otherwise works flawlessly.

I hope that helps.

I have a 360 and 550, each of those has a menu option to allow an internet connection. Is that turned on on your player?

Majestic,

I have my Harmony One programmed for a Sony 360 and have an eject button programmed onto the touch screen. I have only used it once to test it, but it works fine. Give it a try.

Did you have any luck with this?

I just set up my Sony BDP-N460 and am having what appears to be the same issue with connecting to the network.

The player is wired to my router. Router shows the Sony player in the DHCP client table.

When I go to Network Setup->Network Diagnostics, I get the message 'DNS Server not responding'.

When I go to Setup->Network Settings->Internet Settings->Status, all field look okay (IP Address, subnet mask, gateway, DNS Servers) based on the settings reported by my two computers connected to the router (ipconfig /all); except 'Internet Access' failed.

I tried connecting the player directly to my Cable Modem (bypassing the router). Gateway and DNS Servers all ad an IP address of 0.0.0.0. Network diagnostics report "Cannot communicate properly with DHCP Server".

Called Sony. After being on hold for 15+ minutes, I was told the problem was with my ISP since the player could not communicate with the DNS server.

Called Comcast (ISP). They said the problem was my router, as the cable modem does no filtering (this led me to try the connection direct to the cable modem; although the router does no filtering). He also implied that certain routers won't work, but if mine is working fine for the computers, I see no reason for it not to work for the blu-ray player. All computers get IP automatically through DHCP, and that is how I set up the player.

So, do I have a defective device? Any other tests that can be run? Any other ideas?

Thanks,
Ken Slater

Yes... just use the 'EJECT' command for the S360, it is the same code.

I've had the same disappointing experience with my Sony Blu-Ray. I feel like each support team has passed the buck because they either don't want to support it...acknowledging greater issues with the product or they really don't know.

I've spent all evening doing the same troubleshooting steps you mentioned as well as long and disappointing support calls with Sony, ISP, and Router support.

I would not describe this product as plug and play and am disappointed with how Sony has handled my issue if it is clearly not the first time this has occured.
