This argument comes up at every Olympics. I wish the IOC would just come up with a points system and have an official standings for the Olympics.

I think both Medal Count and Gold medal count are bad ways of judging the winner.

Medal count reduces the value of a Gold medal to that of a silver and bronze.
Gold medal count basically removes the relevance of Silver and Bronze medals.

If they put in a point system for the medals, I think that would find the best middle ground...more importantly stop people from arguing about who's on top based on which standings list.

Congratulations USA for winning the most medals in a Winter Olympics games.
Congratulations Canada for winning the most Gold medals in a Winter Olympic Games.

@aristotles: How do you like the torch replica? I ordered one online yesterday, can't wait for it to arrive!

Totally agree!

Fortunately, in another few days, no one anywhere will care at all.

Haha so true, I'll care though (not about these Olympic standings, but future ones).

Typical (simple) scoring for G/S/B has been (when I've seen it used in the past):

Gold - 5
Silver - 3
Bronze - 1

Using this, what is the total? I'd look it up myself, but don't really have the time now. Regardless, who cares? Both the US and Canada did great this year.

Yep !

The UK has traditionally used 4/2/1 I think (when they don't use the gold medal count at least). They'd have to work out a system that makes sense, but most importantly is used everywhere and is officially recognized.

By 5/3/1:

USA scores 103
Canada scores 96

Even under that, the U.S. would prevail 103 to 96.

EDIT: Beaten to the punch by a much brighter mathematician than I.
