Default Buying a PS3

Now that I've got a nice pile of gift cards stocked up, I'm going to pick up a PS3 tonight and hopefully a few games, depending on what the local Best Buy has in stock. I'm hoping for the first Uncharted, Metal Gear Solid, and maybe Heavy Rain.

What are some recommendations for games as I start to build up my collection. How is the remote control and the earpiece? Any advice you guys can give is certainly welcome.

I would start with Uncharted a great game that you can buy for $20.

Heavy Rain is the definition of "Awesomeness only capable on the PS3"! Also, Uncharted 1 and 2 if you have enough! But if you've played neither then play Uncharted 1 first.

the uncharted games are great to start with, and if you like shooters, you should give MAG a try, its much different than the call of duty games, but im hooked, i love the structure of the game, and god of war is going to be out soon, save some money for that for sure, and if you havent played the before, the god of war collection is a pretty good price for two fantastic games

also, if you are planning of watching a lot of movies on your ps3, you should really get one of the remotes, but dont buy it right away, i dont know if they still do it, but when i bought mine, there was a coupon in the back of the manual or somewhere in the paperwork that you send in for a free remote, id check that out first. and the headset works great, although its a tad uncomfortable, but i think almost every bluetooth earpiece works though, so its not hard to find a good one

Check around first before venturing out, they are a bit in short supply right now.

All 3 of the games you listed are excellent. Uncharted and Metal Gear Solid 4 are some of my favorite games of all time, and although I havn't played Heavy Rain yet, i've heard it's amazing. The BD remote control works pretty well, although I would recommend using the regular PS3 controller first and seeing if it works well enough for you. If you don't like it that much you can always pick up the BD remote later. And I havn't used the official PS3 bluetooth headset (I have a Jabra that I got with Warhawk) but I have heard good things about it. Other good exclusive games for the PS3 are Killzone 2, the Resistance franchise, inFamous, God of War 3 (coming out March 16th), and of course Uncharted 2. Other good games that aren't exclusive are the Assassin's Creed games (especially #2), Grand Theft Auto 4, and for online play Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. Hope this helps!

Awesome tip on the remote. Thanks very much! I'll hold-off on that then. If it's not a freebie anymore, it looks like Amazon's got it for a decent price so I don't mind waiting a couple days.

I'll keep an eye open for GoW III in the coming weeks, but will probably get the collection pack first at some point.

I had read about DLC for Heavy Rain pre-orders. Is there any word yet when/if it will be available for non-pre-orders?

One other thing I'm wondering is, how are the prices on PSN? I've got an X-Box right now, so are prices between the two comparable? I definitely like that PSN doesn't have a membership tier, but how are the prices for DLC?

PS3, great choice.

Remote for films is a must, even if you are only going to watch the odd one as it is so much easier to use than the controller. Official earpiece is great to use (for me) but everyone has different tastes and you may not like it. As for games, Uncharted, Burnout Paradise, Resident Evil 5, Bad Company 1 or 2 (out now), Batman Arkum, and GTA4. All different so you should find one you like.

Yes the prices are generally comparable.

Prices on PSN depend on what you are buying, normally I believe they are the same price for DLC as on XBOX Live, for example Map Packs for Call of Duty: World at War were $9.99 each on either console. The DLC for Assassin's Creed 2 (which I just purchased) was $3.99 for the first one and $4.99 for the second one. And i'm not sure about the DLC for Heavy Rain, hopefully another member can help you there. Oh yeah, definately pick up the God of War Collection before you play God of War 3. I had never played those games before so I got the Collection and have loved playing through them! They did a nice job rendering the graphics in HD, giving PS2 games a new look.

Definitely get Infamous, most people always forget about it or don't like it but i found it to be amazing. I had such a blast playing it and i can't wait to have no games to play to go back and be evil on my second playthrough :P

And of course you'll get lots of recommendation on obvious (yet totally deserving ) titles such as Uncharted 1 and 2 and MSG4 and Ratchet and Clank and Little Big Planet etc.

Katamari Forver was also pretty kick ass, if you're into Katamari of course (which there's not alot of those around heh)

Buying a PS3 was the best entertaintment decision i ever made after buying an HDTV. I open it every single day. I watch all the HD(MKV to VOB) shows that i missed on tv, watch lots of blu-ray movies and play lots of games. I'm afraid it's gonna blow up since i use it so damn much! Had it for almost 2 years (the MSG4 80gb BC)

The value for DLC on Xbox Live and PSN is the same except just PSN actually shows you how many dollars it is while the Xbox Live version tells you the same thing but in points that don't make a whole lot of sense and make it kind of confusing on how much it is. And then with games that are exclusive to PS3 well they're pretty much what you would expect if it was on the 360.

I'm all for recommending games, but do you have a collection or a list you've played before? I find that to be a good starting point for determining what games you should plan on playing.

Similarly, I'll listen to anyone who wants to recommend games to me, but the best way to make a case is to refer to my collection and cite examples from it.

Default Buying a PS3

Anyone know where I could get a PS3 Slim nowadays without paying anything 'extra' or waiting on a pre-order?

If you have ANY interest in horror or sci-fi games then pick up Dead Space! Best gaming experience on the PS3 for me Also Uncharted 2 for jaw-dropping graphics, Killzone 2 for all-round awesome game and Bad Company 2 for the ultimate team-work shooter!

On the PSN I recommend Battlefield 1943
