Also, who says that Ethan was dragged anywhere? Shelby was following him as he remembered him from the accident so he knew that he loved his son. Therefore, he probably investigated further knowing that he had blackouts now and probably found Ethan wandering in the street speaking incoherently or something like that.

I like it that the writers did this, as they leave it to YOU to reason out some of the details and not hold your hand.
