You are right about that. Distributors here (I'm in Chengdu now) can't afford to wait. Within a day or two of the movie's release in theaters a cam copy is available on the streets. A week or two later you can get a pretty good DVD copy. There are also a lot of upconverted Blu-ray copys of Confucius here already as well. Distributors in China have to capitalize ASAP

This is a so so movie. I watched it with Eng subs. It was quite hard for me to follow due to the fact that I had to read the movie. It's one of those movies where they rowdy up a big armies but nothing happens (just like Mongol). Just don't expect big epic battle scenes. You will be disappointed. The CGI was also pretty bad too. For a big budget film like this...I expected more! I think I just expected too much from this film. 3/5 from me.

The trailer looks so stunning, I am quite sure that the movie has got a depth in its story-lineup. Hope this would bring out something new to the viewers.

Hope you will able to view it with much better luck than me.
![]() Last night I was watching it but struggling to keep my eyes awake & fell asleep a couple of times in the first 30 min. As a result, I stopped the movie. Probably I was exhausted from work. Will try to rewatch it from beginning. ![]() |

Ok, finally got round to watching it last night. I got my disc from DDDhouse. So here's a mini-review based on my first viewing:
Movie: *** 1/2 out of ***** Confucius is a sage..... and whilst he firmly believes in time honored traditions and rituals, the movie also portrayed him as a bit of a radical thinker that challenges archiac mindset and values in light of humanity. I guess he's a bit of a human rights activist and is never afraid to confront the aristocracy to fight for the rights of the commoner. My confucian history is practically dog-poo so I can't speak of the historical accuracy of the events shown in the movie but what the movie does is to invoke an interest to want to find out more about this man, which is a credit to the way the movie is written. On the downside, you will need to have patience to sit through this movie. I would have rated the movie higher if it had been more fast paced. The acting by Chow Yuen-Fatt is great and Zhou Xun looked great but unfortunately her scene time is very limited. PQ: **** out of ***** Great PQ and I rate it the same as what you get in Mulan (which isn't too shabby). One thing to note is that there isn't a lot of color in the movie except when they are in the Kingdom of Wei. But when you do get colors, the rolling green hills looks luscious and the flowers look bright. Otherwise you get the same greyish hues that you see in Mulan for most part of the movie. Flesh tones seemed natural and details are defined by the fine strands of Confucius white hair sticking out of place. AQ: Not Rated I don't have the proper setup (mine is a 3.1) but on the disc cover, I see that they offer 3 selections: 7.1 LPCM, 7.1 DTS and 7.1 Dolby. Dialogue is in mandarin only and they do have English subs which is most correct. My only gripe is that the festival of "Winter Solstice" has been subbed as "Winter Sacrifice". But I am just nickpicking..... Overall: A slow paced history flick that focuses on a man's pursuit for knowledge and perseverance in what he believes in. |

Finally, I managed to view this movie. I agree with wreckwrx's review. Since I don't have the patience, I took a break twice during the movie. Paused, get a drink & snack, etc...It's quite stressful viewing this film in a single sitting. LOL
![]() Speaking of the the pace, I find it extremely slow. As usual, great performance from by Chow Yuen Fatt. I'm puzzled over the wonderful Zhou Xun limited screen time. I thought she'd be Chow's antagonist since she's a smart girl (with sharp toungue) too but somehow the abrupt end of her character without proper explanation resulting in an unsatisfactory conclusion (to Zhou's character). ![]() Me too will give the movie 3.5 stars. PQ & SQ are both great...easily 4 stars! Last edited by pchin; 04-15-2010 at 09:44 AM. |
