I am starting to feel some of the old emotions I had for these movies again, maybe I'll buy the trilogy of books before April 6.

I actually bought the trilogy for my Kindle for 12 bucks in anticipation for this release. Darn fine read.

Only 70 more pages to go here, and I will be done with the Silmarillion....this book makes my head hurt!

It's ironic that practically EVERYTHING else Tolkien wrote was an easy, smooth read, except the Silmarillion. One possibility is that it is more of Christopher's writing style than his father's. If so, it only serves to reinforce the truth that his father was a genius.

I never had much trouble with Silmarillion. I think I was 11 or 12 years old first time I read it. Was the French translation as I still could not read too well in English back at that time. I always loved the style of it, more like an history book then a novel.

My understanding is that he wrote the essays over a period of 50 years and they were written for himself and no audience in mind. Thus the tongue he uses is a more accurate reflection of his style than any other book. I believe it was Christopher who collected and edited them, making the decision to get them published and out to the public. So, I have believed this is why I find this book to be such a difficult read.

IIRC Tolkien wanted the Silmarillion to be the the basis for myths and legends for the British Isles, like other countries had. I thought he had wanted ti published before LOTR but the publisher wanted more hobbit based stories and he was writing LOTR for his son Christopher who was off to war.

The later publications that Christopher brought out seem to have a lot of his dry writing style. Occasionally he will have direct quotes from his father, but he is mostly organizing his father's notes, rather than rewriting them in a more interesting style.

OK, I understand. I'm not sure what is harder, getting through the writing style of J.R.R./Christopher or trying to familiarize yourself with the many characters and places introduced in the Silmarillion. Both have weighed heavily on me, and I think this is why it is taking me a while to complete this book.

I read Silmarillion simply because I was hooked on Tolkien.Although I finished it,it didn't give me anything.I felt it was a chore. . . .

Thankfully I have my trusty Guide to Middle Earth and the Atlas from Fonstad by my side to help make sense of it all. Those 2 references are invaluable and have helped me greatly already.

I wish I had something like that 30 years ago when I first got into it. That would have been very good
