That's all assuming that Toshiba is actually continuing to produce the A2 model, which seams highly unlikely. More logically, since the replacement model is available, the $198 deal is just to get rid of existing inventory... and unlikely to last all that long. That said, I suppose that AWESOME Venutrer player could be put on sale for $199 at one of the couple of online stores that actually sell that thing. I'm sure it will just blow away anything in it's path.

Seriously, though, I would imagine $249 will be the main "entry" price for HD DVD players going into the holidays. Now Blu-ray definitely doesn't need to match that, but having players readily available in stores for $399 would be nice... and not just the 40GB PS3, though I think that will be a great start.

Default Hey!!!

If you are going to post it like that, then you better point out that the Toshiba players are only spec'ed for 1080WH"i"didibuythis vs 1080"p"erfection for Blu-ray players.

It won't because Blu-ray players will be lowered to counter and it's status quo once again.

What next $99 is the magic price, then $49, it never stops.

A clever salesman will have no trouble pushing cheap 1080i players on the general public who to be honest aren't probably going to be thinking of the difference between 1080i and 1080p, all they care about is the discs are HD to go with their new HD set they picked up.
$399 PS3's are a start, but I would like to see Blu ray players closer to $300 to compete, they would move a ton a that price, though I do think the 40 GB PS3 will sell quite well.

I'll say again for the millionth time. HD-DVD is the format fighting for its life. Blu ray has too much support and is plain and simply a better technology. Best case senario for hd-dvd is co-existing with blu-ray, while blu-ray could easily kill off hd-dvd. Remember also that sony pictures will never be hd-dvd, while hd-dvd doesn't have that power. They can't pay off studios forverer.

The prices of the players will fall because of the rise in competition (more players and manufacturers in the market). Good old fashioned competition at it's best.

Default Can BD+ be cracked?

I am sorry for the question in the subject , but I think this is yet another reason for studios to go blu.

For anyone interested, Paramount has been "paramounted" they took all the extra care possible with the "transformers" release, and actually changed their AACS Keys. This was VERY succesful... for a little less than 2 weeks.

For what is is worth, I have seen where the "new" AACS heys have been cracked, and transformers rips are showing up on the net. If the greedy b@stards had let Tosh/M$ keep their $150M and instead release ONLY on blu with BD+, they wouldn't have to worry so much about rips.

You just got to wonder if and when paramount started feeling buyers (or in this case sellers) remorse, and if not, how much will they have to loose before they do, after all. how do you put a value on loosing control of people stealing your product.

Anything CAN be ripped, it is a matter of time. If bad came to worse, you could just take the downsampled component out directly into a capture card.

Well CC is now on the under 200 dollar bandwagon with a 40 dollar off coupon in the Sunday paper for 40 bucks off your purchase which makes the A2 now 160 dollars. They are selling the A2 for 197.99 plus a coupon for 40 bucks off.

You have to think also how many homes have 1080P sets in them compared to homes with EDTV 720P and HDTV 1080i sets I am willing to bet that it is a majority of close to 90% still with 720p/1080i. Not to mention any early LCD/Plasma sets are only 1366X768 max res.

@ Habsrule,

That's some pretty scary price cutting. $160 for any HD player is crazy low. It looks like the BDA needs to do some pretty hefty price cutting. I am not sure why there have been no instant rebate programs. Free movies are nice but saving money is better.

Yes, the Habs do rule.

Hi there, TV sets that support 720p are in fact HD. EDTV's are sets that only support 480P.
