Does it really tell anything? That price drop effectively killed the X-Box add-on. Can you see asian manufacturers rushing to make HD-DVD players? Can you see an integrated X-Box/HD-DVD product coming? The more protracted this war gets, the more alienated Toshiba becomes. Hence, the payoffs.

Lame.

Off-Topic Discussion thread?

Isn't there a plan to create a safe play area for concern trolling?

Well the race is'nt over. Even though Blu Ray is the best format a lot of "normal" consumers dosent know the diffenrence between the 2 formats. So if they see a sign where you can get HD DVD for 200 $ and on the shelf next to it you get Blu Ray for 400$, most of them will get HD DVD.

I think price is very important at this stage.

You have to think also how many homes have 1080P sets in them compared to homes with EDTV 720P and HDTV 1080i sets I am willing to bet that it is a majority of close to 90% still with 720p/1080i. Not to mention any early LCD/Plasma sets are only 1366X768 max res.
720p is not EDTV ITS HD

One thing seems quite clear from staggering array of "Wal-Mart update" posts on this forum: there is no single unified HD strategy for Wal-Mart going into the holidays.

The decrepit old Wally about a mile from here was getting a slow trickle of HDM titles during the last several weeks it was open, giving me great hope for our new Supercenter (also a mile from here); surely a brand new superstore opening just in time for the biggest shopping season of the year could give some leading indicator of the retail giant's over-arcing tactics for singlehandedly deciding the format war once and for all, right?

Opening morning not a bit of HD -ware to be found, neither hard nor soft---not outside the gaming cabinets, anyway. No movies, no standalone players. Hugely anticlimactic for me. I'm still getting over the bummer.

What is pretty funny is that every studio, including the music industry complain about piracy and about how they lose millions of dollars. What have they done with HD-DVD to make it just a little harder to pirate? They haven't done anything. At least the BDA, regardless of the reason, moved forward with BD+. If you want my honest opinion, the studios deserve to have their movies ripped and money stolen for being ignorant and not implementing a better copy protection scheme.

I see and hear this a lot from HD-DVDers. I used to think that you guys hate Blu-Ray. However, you don't. All of you guys have these cheap paperweight Toshiba players with little/none of the titles that you want to watch. You lack content. In your heart, you would absolutely LOVE to buy a Blu-Ray player in order to gain access to the content. However, you are intent on paying DVD player prices. This is creating somewhat of a bottleneck, which leads to a backlash against the price of Blu-Ray players. At some point, you guys are going to have to realize that if you want Honda/Toyota/Nissan quality and reliability over Kia/Suzuki/Hyundai then you are going to have to pay a premium. Don't you think CE and Studios are concerned about hardware and software prices being at DVD level? THE HDM MARKET HAS TO BE VIABLE.

Yes, the Habs do rule.
I have to agree 100% The HABS do rule nice shootout win over the Pens last night even if I do hate having the shootout in the NHL.

I also agree that a price cut is the best form of adoption yes some free disks are nice but keeping hard earned cash in your pocket is much nicer for most people.

Cheap prices always win the electronics market over. That's why premium priced Sony doesn' have much name recognition and poor sales, no wait that's not true. Let me try again, that's why the expensive ipod and iphone market fell flat on its face, wait that doesn't wash either. Gee maybe having prices aimed at the service industry demographic doesn't affect the sales of electronics hardware much.

If you're not willing to invest in higher-end equipment for new technology when it's still at a 5% market share, you cannot win a format war.

200 dollar players mean nothing without Disney. The cheapo player market is also the Disney family market.

We love Disney but a 200 dollar player plays right into quite a number of peoples price range Disney or not. There are a number of other studios with HD animation available and Disney doesn't have the market cornered on Hi Def animation at this point with oly what 5 titles released currently. So many families will still be playing their DVD's n a hi def player regardless what format it is I know we do and we have over 180 Disney DVD's in our collection. As much as we like to think Disney is the be all and end all of animation and kids entertainment it just isn't honestly it kills me to say it as our family loves Disney, as I type this my oldest daughter is going through her Disney pin books counting how many pins of each princess etc she has.

As much as I hate to say it, in the end the war has nothing to do with me and enjoying movies on my HDTV is the prime objective.

I just bought a slinglink quad for my dvr and ps3, but the third port will be used for a A3 come late December.

Ive asked for nothing but Amazon GC's for Christmas, so Ill be buying the Spiderman trilogy along with an A3 if nothing changes before then. Nothing really interests me right now, but there are some good titles coming to theaters that are HDDVD exclusive. If I had anything I wanted on HDDVD right now Id drive to Walmart and buy the $200 A2, but Ill wait and get the A3.

At this point the only thing that would keep me from buying an A3 would be Univ going neutral or WB going exclusive. Those might make me wait it out a little longer.

I saw Transformers twice at the movies so I don't have to own it anytime soon.

You should hold out longer...The A3 won't be worth much once DUD is dead.

yes bd+ can be crack but if the studios become efficent enouf they could creat seperat vm or system for each release or atleast high profile release this would make them have to crack each title one at a time(which they can just release adif vm or codes) which if they do that then hackers would idealy find an exploet inhe ps3 at a certen from frimware but eventrualy it would come down to exploiting a stand alone in which caseif that is the case with only 1 particular stand alone then all discs would just come with an update for that player but if it is wide spread they could creat an athgorithym that would be intentionaly not compatiable with all players forcing users into a frimware update...my point is with bd they can do so much to stop wide spread piracy
