Well I'll wait another week (shipping time) to get it for $15+ cheaper.

Hopefully the price drop on U.S. set happens sooner rather than later. Otherwise I foresee a lot of people just importing the Canadian version.

EDIT: WOW. Nevermind. Amazon.CA is charging $10 bucks shipping and handling on it. No wonder it's cheap.

What is the difference between the "Theatrical" release and whatever the other release is?

Well, the Extended Editions were originally released in 4-disc DVD boxsets, about a year after each theatrical edition. Eventually, all of them were combined together into a 12-disc boxset.

Each Extended Cut of the films have many restored scenes, visual FX sequences, and additional music cues by composer howard Shore, all reincorporated under the supervision of director Peter Jackson. However, as Jackson's verbally expressed a preference for the theatrical versions, these are not technically described as "director's cuts". Each film runs much longer than its original counterpart, as noted below...

Fellowship of the Ring: 3 hrs., 28 min. (from 2 hrs., 58 min.)

The Two Towers: 3 hrs., 43 min. (from 2 hrs., 59 min.)

Return of the King: 4 hrs., 10 min. (from 3 hrs., 20 min.)

Also, each set contains 2 full discs of bonus material not found on the theatrical DVDs, including documentaries, interviews, commentaries, etc.

So is it safe to say that it would be worth investing in these when they come out on Blu Ray? Or wait to see if another version is released?

Have you seen the theatrical versions or no?

If so, I say rent the extended editions on dvd, if you like them more, just wait for those if you don't want to double dip. If you don't like them more, snag this release.

I will personally be waiting for the Extended Edition Blu-Ray release, as those are the versions I'm most familiar with as a viewer. I enjoy them a great deal, but watching them is often exhausting because of the long runtimes, and all the extras which often are just as long. If you're a casual fan, I'd say go with the Theatrical Cuts, but the EEs are much better overall, IMO.

I have seen the theatrical releases before so I guess that will make my decision easy.

If you're in the U.S. it isn't. Go ahead and try. I literally just did. Same with Amazon.uk and amazon.jp to U.S. (or any foreign shipping)

Jackson said the Extended Editions were for lovers of the books. They have more material from the books in them.

The big question is who is worthy enough to invite over to watch it. They can't be dead beats, as there has to be plenty of cheering, t-shirt removal and waving when Aragorn beheads Lurtz . Also, will have to have Pizza Hut deliver for at least one of the movies (they have the best buffalo wings), and head to Costco to pick up a case of Blue Moon.
