I got the steelbook but even though it looks pretty on the outside, it's kinda flimsy, and mostly plastic, as compared to the beautiful steelbook case for Up that it resembles. It only houses 6 or 7 discs, so you wont fit the digital copy discs in there if you put the discs in the steelbook case

I'll wait for the extended versions.

LOTR is based on Tolkiens life and in some ways the bible. I have never read the books but i understand that the movies differ from them.

In the movie Frodo returns to the Shire and everything is fine. In the books, the shire has become an industrialized nightmare.

Yup, after they destroy the Ring and return to the Shire, they find that Saruman has enslaved the hobbits and turned the town into a factory of sorts. Then they arm the other Hobbits and they force Saruman and his men out, called the scouring of the Shire.

But in all seriousness, I'm gonna get these, and then of course get the Extended Editions (which will more than likely come out next year as a 10th anniversary thing, idk, and then The Hobbit, and then The Hobbit Part II, and then the Extended Edition of The Hobbit, and then the Extended Editon of The Hobbit Part II, and then the super ultimate deluxe box set edition of all five theatrical cuts, and then the mega ultimate deluxe edition box set of all the extended editions. I'm a LOTR and all things related fanboy, so sue me.
I just called my lawyer.

Not everything needs to be demo-material for a home theatre system.
These are movies that SHOULD BE demo material for a home theatre.

In the book, "The Scouring of the Shire" chapter near the end of the book has a two-fold purpose:
(1) To show that victory does not come without cost.
(2) The Hobbits, now "trained", are capable of solving problems without outside help (e.g. Gandalf, Bombadil, Elves, Men, etc.).

Tolkien from a 1951 letter, shortly after the chapter was finished:

"The Hobbits, still Hobbits in idiom and stature, but clad now in the arms and garb of the high chivalry of the South, fearless and enobled, approach the Shire, and Gandalf says farewell. They go on to discover that the tenacles of evil of that time have reached even to their beloved land in their absence. Greed and ambition have touched even the Hobbits, and one of Frodo's kin has tried to corner all the wealth and power of the community. He has long been in secret communication with Saruman, only to be outwitted; for evil Men, servants of Saruman, have really usurped him, ruling all by pillage and force. Barracks disfigure villages, trees are felled far and wide, rivers fouled, and mills turned into machines. The 'scouring of the Shire' ending in the last battle ever fought there, occupies a chapter."

Oh yes, one more point (the edit), you find out the real end of Saruman and Wormtongue.

What do you know...I haven't read the books since 5th grade so it's been a while.

It's been years since reading, but I thought Wormtongue and Saruman were killed in the Shire?

"The Hobbits find the bridge at Brandywine closed with a large spiked gate. When they demand entrance, a frightened gatekeeper informs them that he is under orders from the Chief at Bag End to let no one enter between sundown and sunrise. Frodo guesses that the Chief must be Lotho, his greedy relative. Merry and Pippin climb over the gate. The four hobbits set out for Hobbiton and encounter a large group of Hobbit Shirriffs, who inform them they are under arrest. The four hobbits laugh and move on. One of the Shirriffs quietly warns Sam that the Chief has many Men in his service.

Leaving the Shirrifs behind, the four hobbits find a half-dozen Men who claim they do not answer to Lotho, the Hobbit Chief, but to another mysterious boss named Sharkey. The men threaten Frodo, but the other three hobbits draw swords. The men turn and flee. Sam rides on to find Tom Cotton, the oldest hobbit in the region. Farmer Cotton and his sons gather the entire village to fight. The band of Men return, but surrender after a brief fight.

After the battle, Farmer Cotton explains that shortly after the Hobbits first left, Lotho began to purchase farmland, causing a shortage of food in Hobbiton. Cotton says that a gang of Men from the south took over the town. The next morning, a band of nearly one hundred Men approaches Hobbiton. Pippin arrives with his relatives, and a fierce battle ensues. Seventy of the Men die in the Battle of Bywater, as the conflict is forever remembered.

The three remaining companions lead an envoy to Frodo’s home, Bag End, to deal with the new Chief. To their surprise, the hobbits find Saruman standing at the gate to Bag End. Saruman—who, it turns out, is the mysterious boss Sharkey—pronounces a curse upon the Shire if any hobbit should harm him. Frodo assures his friends that Saruman has no power, but he forbids them to kill the wizard. As Saruman passes by Frodo, he draws a knife and stabs Frodo, but Frodo’s armor shields him.

Frodo again demands that his companions show mercy on the old wizard. Frodo’s clemency, however, enrages Saruman. Frodo asks about his relative Lotho, and Saruman informs Frodo that his servant, Wormtongue, killed Lotho in his sleep. Wormtongue, standing nearby, cries out that Saruman ordered him to do so. Saruman kicks Wormtongue, but Wormtongue stabs the old wizard. Wormtongue flees with a yell, but three Hobbit arrows kill him. From Saruman’s corpse, a gray mist rises and blows away."

Saving Private Ryan just embarrasses LOTR here...Just look at the grain structure of SPR, it's beautiful. Obviously the LOTR shot has no grain, which means DNR. Although to be fair, LOTR may have been shot with film having less grain than SPR but there still should be SOME grain.

Not really considering the age and the deliberate filtering in the master. They should look very good, but I dont see these as being demo worthy all things considered.

I think the sound will be, as long as the original tracks are intact, these films had some of the best scores I've ever heard.

Age should have nothing to do with the PQ.
