My advice too....Seven Samurai is the best samurai movie of all time. Ran, Kagemusha, Yojimbo are all awesome and Throne of Blood is another of my favorites.

Don't listen to all the Tom Cruise BS. I think he is a weird as everyone says too but the Last Samurai is fantastic! He is fantastic in it! So is the rest of the cast. It should be the first one you get!

Some more Kurosawa love from me!!! I also enjoy the Lone Wolf & Cub film series. The first two are also available, re-edited and dubbed as Shogun Assassin. You know the film the Bride's daughter is watching in Kill Bill 2. I prefer the unedited original Japanese versions however, the 2nd film, Babycart on the River Styx is my personal favorite.

I was thinking the same thing. I own and enjoy Last Samurai, but I don't really consider it a 'legit' samurai movie.. and it definitely doesn't belong with some of these others.

I have all three in R2 SE dvds and have found myself watching all three at least once every month!!
Yeah! I want these on blu badly.

Also, I recommend checking out Samurai Fiction (writer/director Hiroyuki Nakano).. it's one of my personal favorites (he also did one about ninja called Red Shadow [or Akakage] that I loved too). It's not on blu-ray, just DVD, but it's definitely worth finding. It's in black and white (with a couple stylistic splashes of color.. think Sin City, but not quite to the same degree, and Nakano did it first of course). It's a great story with a fair share of comedy. There are fight scenes and there are deaths, but by the end of the film I always have a really good, happy feeling.

Sword of the Stranger is really good and thought Last Samurai was a good one also even though I wish Warner would give it a lossless treatment already. Ichi is another great movie. Also Samurai 7 with also Seven Samurai.

Samurai and hip hop is kind of weird but however Afro Samurai and Samurai Champloo are fun to watch and also have a good story to follow with plenty of action.

Must-have:
The Last Samurai
Shinobi: Heart Under Blade (though more ninja than samurai)
Red Cliff (make sure its the uncut version & not theatrical)
Samurai 7 (if you like anime, but its a series, not a film)
Sword of the Stranger (anime)

Perhaps:
Warlords
Battle of Wits
Three Kingdoms

I think I've only seen Warlords out of those 3. Problem is they're all so similar looking its hard to tell them apart

if i had to start with one that is out on blu, what would everybody suggest? i was looking at kagemusha, yojimbo or sanjuro. not quite the same, but also toss the international red cliff in there as well. i don't own a criterion disc, so i do have one question....will those all come in the clear plastic cases? i only caught a bit of the conversation regarding the case program they were offering, but would most releases now have the plastic case?

thanks.....i am itching for a buy on these. need to pick up serentity as well before it goes back up.

Kagemusha, Yojimbo/Sanjuro were/are only offered in the clear plastic..... only the first titles released (up to Last Year at Marienbad or around there I believe) were in paper cases......
