The BDP-83 crowd and PS3 crowd aren't the same - not by a long shot. Different age groups (mostly) and different interests. You do know that, supposedly, the PS3 won't be completely 3D-capable?

What? The Oppo freezes? The reason the Oppo is so highly rated is because it's freakishly fast and is rock solid.

Truth. Just as an example - which device's fanbase is comprised of a larger percentage of the sort of person who despises film grain and wants every movie on bd to look like a video game come to life, leaves their Sony lcd cranked on "candyland" mode 24/7, and to whom terms like "region free" or "region mod" may as well be Latin? - ps3 or oppo 80/83? mMmm, I think I could make an educated guess....

I have used or owned numerous players and I own the BDP-80 (which I love) and a Sharp model (got it as a freebie a few weeks ago and its t errible in terms of loading, gui and so forth) but the PS3 is still the king for all around usage, FW updates, speed, yadda yadda. If you game its a no brainer. Even if you don't its still a great and reliable BD player that still bests 90% of the players on the market. I'd suggest the Oppo if you dont game at all and want the same reliability and performance with more options and the ability to mod easily. |

I would not trade my PS3 for any Oppo or any Blu Ray player.
If my PS3 breaks (now that the warranty is over),... I can exchange it with Sony for a recertified one for $150. How many other players have such a feature?... ?? Looks like the Oppo players are great and they are currently the only non-PS3 players I would consider but my PS3 is fantastic. It does so much more than Blu Ray. I use it for SACD, DVD, CD, MP3, MP4, PS3 Games, PS2 Games, PS1 Games, Internet, Netflix instant viewing and it does great with all of it. I also can use it to watch recorded HD programs from my networked DVR (MythTV) so I often watch the Simpsons or the Olympics or whatever with it. It's great with stuff like that. I have put a 500GB hard drive in my 60Gb PS3 and I use the heck out of it every day. My kidz are watching the Princess and the Frog on it currently. --Brian |

As for the "trailer park of players" comment.... I couldn't care any less about what people think of my PS3, the only thing that matters is what I think of it. I'm not out to "impress" people with it. If people knew what it does or when they figure out what it does, if they aren't impressed with it then they are simply fools.
Beyond that,.. I frequently host movies nights and people seem very impressed with it. (Then again it's hooked up to a projector so the system is pretty nifty.) The Oppo players cost more and do less. And no player is as reliable as the PS3. Read this board for a while and watch any and all the stand alone players choke on new releases. You will get the sense that new releases are tested on PS3's which they likely are. =Brian Last edited by bhampton; 03-22-2010 at 07:21 PM. |

I have the Sony BDP N460. Got it free from BB. I dont own one yet but the PS3 is the king of the Blu Ray players and everything else in between. It does everything and anything besides cook for you which would be a nice feature. I know one thing I will have one by the end of Summer if not before.

My PS3s played everything thrown at them, that much is true...... But I did have 3 die in about 18 months time..... and that was before I had ever owned a video game, so I wouldn't say it was long hours of use etc (and yes... everything is properly ventilated in a temperature controlled environment) I'm praying my current one dies again so I can justify to the wife that it's time to get the Oppo or similar unit. I can give up playing the one game I own to get a better player. I do think the "Trailer Park of Players" comment was a little unnecessary..... but at the same time, the point he was making holds a lot of water..... I never knew how many people got into DVD when the PS2 came out...... I got into Blu-ray when I got my PS3, but it wasn't because of the PS3..... I got the PS3 BECAUSE OF BLU-RAY.......not the other way around. |
