Warner catches heat for a reason. LOTR is one of those titles they should have went the extra mile for.
Let's be honest. Probably less than a hundred or so people are going to be anal enough not to be these because of the DNR issues.

This title will most likely sell very well on Blu-Ray. DNR and all. Theatrical release and all.

That's the thing. We can all gripe on the forums as much as we want, or even boycott the thing, but the fact remains that there are a hundred times as many people who don't care and are going to go buy it. Has Paramount even hinted at a remastered Gladiator? Nope. I doubt Warner will do any different.

Gladiator is getting a new transfer, it's anyone's guess when it's coming out though.

Well, sorry guys, but I've been displaying these screen caps on my hdtv via hdmi and they pretty much sweep the floor with the dvds. I've never seen these movies in such beauty. I know these discs have plenty of issues and hopefully it'll be cleared up with the release of the Extended Cuts, but I love these movies and I, personally, am not gonna resist picking these up.

I know that makes me part of the problem. My apologies.

http://www.filmsactu.com/test-blu-ra...tours-9449.htm
http://www.filmsactu.com/test-blu-ra...u-roi-9450.htm
(they say the PQ for tboth are pretty much alike and therefore gave them the same scores, wich i don t understand, cause true on their screenshots they look not good either, but on avs they do, very weird)

Bugger about FotR, these screenshots really do look rather bad. And i'm normally quite sceptical about how valid screenshots are for judging pq. But in the really bad cases, the flaws are obvious and this seems to be the case here.

TTT and RotK seem to be ok, but not great on all accounts, though.

Considering how huge this franchise is, i'm disappointed.

I'll rent.

Review on www.thedigitalbits.com:

Quote:
The third thing you should know about this Blu-ray release, is that the A/V presentation quality is very, very good. The films are presented in full 1080p video (using the VC-1 codec), in the original 2.35:1 scope aspect ratio. To my eye, Fellowship isn't quite as crisp and detailed looking as the other two films, though I suspect this is less a BD mastering issue and has more to do with the film's actual post-production. Fellowship was completed first, on a tighter budget, and I recall from the theatres that there were shots here and there that looked a little more digital than the rest. The transfer is still very good - fear not. It's just that Two Towers and Return of the King are absolutely fantastic, with abundant detail and crisp, refined textures. Color and contrast is outstanding on all three. There's a little tiny bit of DNR applied here and there, as there is on almost every film these days, but I don't find it to be an issue quality-wise. Moving on to the sound, the new Dolby TrueHD 5.1 lossless mixes are big, spacious and natural sounding, with smooth imaging, lively surrounds and satisfying bass. A Dolby Surround track is also included, and subtitles are available in English, English SDH, French and Spanish. Upon comparison, these Blu-rays are a massive improvement over even the previously outstanding 4-disc DVD sets - so much in fact so that I now have a very hard time watching the standard-def discs. Lord of the Rings was meant for Blu-ray and doesn't disappoint in that score.

United Kingdom Warners cast a new spell.

I love these movies, But I see no point in the release of the original versions
without the brilliant extended versions, why do warners want to milk the fans of these great films?

There is a proven market for these films on blu ray, apart from the great trilogy's of the past, Lord of the rings, stands head and shoulders above,
Back to the future, Indiana Jones, The original Star wars Trilogy and james bond.

I hope warners will consider the mistake they are making with this release,
I will not be double dipping with Lord of the rings as much as i love these films. I 'll wait for the extended versions.

New line won't be getting my $. Peter Jackson might need cash, but mine won't be part of it. Sleezebags. They could have really shined with this release. I'm not asking them to sell it at cost but they could have shown to the general public what blus could do.

I took some screencaps from my Extended DVD version against the bluray pics posted on that french review

For me it really was a staring competition to see the difference compared to King Kong bluray vs dvd which was as clear as night & day. It looks more focused, sure, but its not a mind blowing picture

DVD town review:

Video:

The New Line video engineers transferred the three "The Lord of the Rings" films to 1080p Blu-ray in their original aspect ratio of 2.40:1 using dual-layer BD50s and a VC-1 codec. The results are as good as any fan could reasonably ask for, and at least some of the scenes must rank among the best-looking live-action images currently available in high definition.

The engineers retain much of the film's light, natural print grain, noticeable mainly in wide expanses of sky because the reproduction is so clean. Facial tones are quite natural, too, although the smooth contours and polished textures of some facial features suggest the use of soft-focus lenses and a possible degree of filtering. As do a few lush, plush, dreamy scenes.

The opening sequences of "The Fellowship of the Ring" demonstrate the director's varying visual style for the films. The first sequence looks deliberately subdued, dull, and veiled to convey the feeling of a flashback, a memory. Then, when the film shifts to the present day in the Shire, it's absolutely glorious, the beauty of the landscape practically bringing tears to one's eyes. Colors are deep, rich, vivid, brilliant, glistening, and glowing by turns, with object delineation varying from slightly bland to remarkably precise. For reasons I can't explain, the color and definition on "The Return of the King" seem the cleanest, brightest, and sharpest of all the movies, although you will hear no complaints from me about any of the transfers. There are scenes here of ravishing beauty. In fact, I can't imagine any viewer being disappointed by the picture quality except those people who might take exception to the director's intentions.

Audio:

The lossless DTS-HD Master Audio 6.1 opens up nicely to the side and rear channels as occasions demand, with a strong impact, deep bass, and exceptionally wide dynamics. While dialogue is firmly rooted in the front center channel, we hear surround activity almost everywhere: during the battles, during the gatherings, during the forest scenes, during the banquets. About my only quibble is that the sound can be a touch forward, so at times it's not as entirely listenable as it might be. Still, the Master Audio is probably true to the soundtrack, so, as I say, it's a quibble.

I wish I could be in love with this trilogy like everyone else is. If these things were released individually, I'd snatch The Fellowship of the Ring up in a heartbeat. The other two, not so much....

Why not look at the screencaps and see for yourself. Obviously the review has no idea what he is talking about.
