How do you organize your collection?

Alphabetically for me.

BR and DVD are completely seperated.

Live action series' go first, followed by anime series', followed by anime features, followed by Criterion (all three of them), followed by regular features. All of these are alphabetical within themselves.

I don't know, I like consistency.. hate it when there's a big funky box set right in the middle of a bunch of regular blu cases.

I noticed a lot of people put The Dark Knight and Batman Begins (and more) together but since I don't have that many movies it's easier in alphabetical order.

Well, I usually hold sequels in multi-disc cases, with the originals that preceded them. So, my DVDs of both those films are in a 4-disc case, filed under "B" for Batman. Likewise, I have similar cases for the "Lord of the Rings", "Spider-Man", "Pirates of the Caribbean", "Superman", and "Star Wars" sets.

slipcovered on the end, then all other by case spine color. i leave my latest purchase on the end of my "shelf in progress", that way my wife doesn't get things out of order. alphabetical has never worked. i remember spine colors for some reason. started with cd's back in the day.
my blu collection is still small. growing at roughly 4-6 a month.

I have mine ordered by PQ, although it's almost impossible to do it 100% correctly.

I start with the Calibration discs, then worst PQ to best. Check out my HT setup where there is a pic of my small collection.

This is an interesting thread.... I have about 800 DVDs and always had them alphabetically. Was never happy with the look of the collection so decided to try it by studio. I got so many comments from visitors saying how great the collection looked. So I am sticking with this.

So for me, blurays are alphabetical by studio, and if the movie starts with "A" or "The" it goes under a or t so all titles starting with "the" are together within that studio. Only other exceptions are Buena Vista, MGM and Sony (see below)

buena vista (Disney animated chronological, pixar chronlogical, other Disney, then dimensions, Hollywoods, miramaxs, touchstones)
criterion,

Other than the exceptions above I dont group similar movies together (ie harry potter, or batman etc.)
At first it's wierd but as it grows it's very easy to find stuff and looks the best. And all the studio emblems are on the spines giving a uniform look.

I also like to think of my collection as a library and the studios consider their collections library's so i like keeping them this way. You learn very quickly which movie comes from which studio library. My database of movies even notes which movies were originally from a different library like Warners 2001 A Sapce Odyssey was originally an MGM release. Mine is under Warner, but in the database I could sort by original distributor as well...

I have a built-in shelving system that runs the length of the HT room that contains all my DVDs, Blus, and video games. I don't like to segregate DVDs and Blus, as I believe they should all just "get along."

From Left to Right it goes like this:

In the middle of the shelving system are three larger shelves that contain the Harry Potter collection, The Star Wars collection, and the Doctor Who collection.

Same as the DVDs, but before them ( because they are superior to... ) First up : MUSIC / alpabetically...AC/DC/ The Last Waltz / Nordic Sound / The Kids Are Alright ( alphabetically by BAND or ARTIST name.
Then by alpabetical title : 2001 - Zodiac.

Then it goes alphabetical beginning with numerics, unless there is a series, such as Harry Potter, the Mummy, Star Wars, etc. Then it goes alphabetical with the series title, then chronological release date ignoring alphabetizing rules:

collectables (actualy anything that could get ruined like digibooks and stuff but not steelbooks which are with the rest)

Mine are in alphabetical by genre. It's just makes it easier to search through them if I'm in a particular mood (action, comedy, sci-fi, etc). And of course they're separated from my DVDs and HD DVDs.

Another neat little way to organize movies that I've also done before (at least through a sortable database search) is to file them in order of highest box office totals (adjusted for inflation typically).

This way of organizing may not be helpful if looking uniform is the ultimate goal but its still a rather historical and interesting way to store the movies. One can scan down the shelves and always see which films have been the most "popular" over time, at least in just a theatre-sense...

It's still a trivial way to store movies and not necessary or important of course. But it's still a neat and interesting way to look at the collection. CD and music collections are often categorized by some in such fashion, usually based on how high each album sold and charted on the Billboard 200 weekly charts etc. You dont necessarily have to AGREE with the sorting of a collection in this way, but it still is an option that at least has a recorded and historical reference which you can always look up and compare between every movie, past or future.

Alphabetically. Same as my DVD's, although my BluRays are kept separate.

There's no other way to do it. By genre is good for "style" or whatever, I guess, but it sure as Hell doesn't make it easier.

Alphabetically makes everything insanely easy to find.

Years and years ago I used to have my DVD's just thrown on the shelf in no order at all... then to find any movie when I was shitfaced drunk was like trying to find Atlantis.

I organized them by the actors or directors. But I keep all of my westerns together expect the clint eastwood westerns.

I seperate them by Genre: I have Drama, Comedy, Family, Action and TV. then I Strict-alpha them. I also do this with my DVDs
