So it wasn't an attempt to smart-arsedly point out how other members were oh-so-wrong in their expectations? Apologies if not, but either way this thread is still a terrible place of sadness.

?

How does that make anyone here look foolish?

I thought the same exact thing, I thought these would get amazing transfers. The vast majority of people did. If anything the onus is on the studios to make the presentations look good, not on anonymous internet posters to accurately predict how they'll end up looking. Predicting wrong doesn't make the posters look bad, it makes the studio in question look incompetent....

Not really. I would've bought both versions gladly.

I prefer the EE hugely but I still had this preordered. Just cancelled it a couple days ago when I saw they were using that same master.

If anything, I'm surprised they were able to talk me out of buying both.

I think you'll find the vast majority of people complaining are complaining because they're huge LotR fans.

Exactly, this is LOTR for Pete's sake, anyone with a blu-ray player and a screwed on head is/was hoping for a beautiful transfer.

On another note, If I can find the time tomorrow, I will try and borrow/watch the 2nd in the series.. Im hoping and praying it will look better than what I saw in the first. (not to make the first sound horrible, but I posted screens so I need not explain the first further.)

If I do get the chance tomorrow I will definitely post some screens.

I'm one of those people who thought that there was no way they could screw this up. I tried to use some logic but obviously there is no way that applies in the world of Blu-rays.

I would agree in terms of blacks and contrast, but not color rendition especially since CRTs are 8 bit displays in essence. Of course, I'm talking about a quality flat panel (Kuro, etc.).

Sorry I could not resist. I still stand behind that Warner intentionally is putting out an @ss product knowing that can sell new and improved versions. Look at how many releases Lucas milked Star Wars fans for over the years. They know if they give everyone a definitive HD product the first time around that they can't sell a new and improved product in the future.

Again unless it is new release or certified classic, WHV is putting its catalog films on autopilot.

I totally agree with this. If they made this look just as pristine as the eventual EE, they would not sell as many since some people will be fine with the TE and would just pass on the EE. However, if the EEs look better, then it just makes it that much easier for another purchase in a year or two.

Uh, what's to argue with?

He'll said he'll ask why they look bad and he'll look into if the BD versions look worse than the broadcast versions. He then talks about how they definitely shouldn't be. He said it "demands a thorough review." OK, fine. I agree. He says:

However, if the screenshots posted by ‘eric.exe’ are indeed reliable, I honestly don’t understand why the screenshots of the broadcast version of FOTR are ”better” as they claim, compared to the Blu-ray. That just shouldn’t be, meaning the broadcast version should not be of better picture quality than the Blu-ray edition.

Eric.exe's screens are most certainly reliable, as they always have been. He was the first to reveal the Gladiator problems. He is never deceptive with these screens.

So, once again, I agree.

Well, they do look worse. And he's right -they shouldn't be. It's not acceptable.

It's obvious they were using the old master used for the broadcast versions. He goes on to say he hopes it wasn't due to an application of DNR. Well, I agree. Unfortunately - it was. Look at the comparison pics - in many examples things are completely robbed of fine detail and turned to wax. It could not be more of a cut and dried example of DNR application. It virtually is the broadcast plus DNR, and for a Blu Ray release that is seriously lackluster.

Do you post just to post by the way?

all i know is I'm going to trust trusted reviewers over anybody posting screencaps on forums. you never the people on these forums could be trying to sabotage this movie in hope of them releasing the extened editions sooner. people do stupid things on the internet. however these reviewers have reviewed movies time and time and they always seem to be spot on specially with the quality of the discs and now there being put in question of some forum people? and why does every screen shot i see (from different people) always have the same exact shots in them? and why of why is it just of the 1st movie and then they say all movies are bad? IMO dont trust people on a forum that could possibly be pissed that the EE's arent released. i would go with the reviewers.

I don't think he ment anything bad by it. It was more to show how excited people were that these movies were coming to blu and they were so sure that it was going to be reference quality only to have warner, as usual, not deliver. I mean damn, did you see what they did with the movie that made them a billion dollars?

now that's hilarious
the screen caps are legit. multiple sources have posted them (including one of your precious blu-ray review sites), and their appearances all agree; and people who can't take screen caps have confirmed that's how they look. denial won't fix the problem (and going through life with so much paranoia can't be healthy).

no one's saying all three movies look bad, because they don't.

so i dont get it. if the reviewers are giving it good reviews but saying it looks like the crappy screencaps then what gives? and yeah there not that precious to me at all i'm just saying if i'm going to trust someone it's going to be the trusted reviewers instead of some kid on a comp doing god knows what lol. and on a 2nd note just saying in general not pointed at you. i always thought screencaps never gave the movie justice to begin with. like i'll a movie reviewed on here with a 5 for PQ and then click the cap and it doesnt look too great. then i'll buy it and it amazing. kind of weird but hey whatcanyado
