DVD Empire lists them as discontinued. So they are indeed out of print.

I'm guessing most people who wanted these movies got them already, and now with a Blu-ray release pending, most people probably aren't buying the DVDs, so retailers aren't carrying them.....
That's probably why WB discontinued them. Just about everyone who wanted them already has them.

That's a ridiculous conspiracy theory.

"Reluctant" to put a review up on his own site?

Please.

Maybe it's because it takes time to actually watch 3 very long movies and write reviews for them.

Or maybe you're right and it's the illuminati.

If I may be so bold as to wonder out loud without being tarred and feathered, with all I have read over the last several pages - what are you going to do when you finally rent or buy () the movies? Are you going to sit and analyze the scenes frame by frame to see if DNR has been applied? How in the hell do you enjoy something like that? And if you did find something, what then - dial 800-NEW-LINE and complain to their receptionist? I wonder what Tolkien would think about this discussion if he were alive?

on a serious note... I will enjoy them... will they be what I had hoped for... NO... but I enjoyed the heck outta Gladiator, which honestly with my eyes and my TV really didn't look as god aweful as everyone said it did... so I'm sure I will like this release too. And IF by some miracle these do get remastered in the future... I might pick em up then again cuz essentially, I'm not paying anything for these cuz I'm using gift cards that I won at work... YAY!!! Go ME!

it either looks good to my eyes, or it doesn't. it doesn't take forensic tools to not be impressed by a murky low-res disc

Discussing the wasted potential of these amazing films on Blu-Ray is just as worthy of discussion as the older films that look AMAZING on Blu-Ray (Braveheart). Is it not?

I won't buy them now, but when I rent them I'll watch them and, yeah, probably be pretty disappointed that they (Fellowship in particular) look so generally poor. I love these movies, I was hoping for something great.

When it's this obvious you don't have to analyze anything "frame by frame" to see what's gone wrong. You can practically watch it on FF and tell it's soft as hell with DNR. If you know what a great transfer looks like, and you have a decent display, spotting a bad transfer takes no effort whatsoever.

Also, I'm printing out WWTD bumper stickers as we speak.

It blows me away that so many people on specialist A/V site like this don't seem fazed in the slightest when one of the biggest franchises of all time gets blatantly lackluster treatment, especially fans of the franchise. You think if anyone would care about this sort of thing it'd be a site like this. It's almost the opposite, it's almost like some people here are offended that people are disappointed (even though the reasons for the disappointment couldn't be clearer.) I don't get it, honestly.

It is actually quite easy to tell DNR, I bought The Good The Bad & The Ugly and the first thing I noticed was that DNR had been applied to the transfer, I couldn't enjoy it, quite simply I hate the look of DNR.

If this was Wal-Mart.com and we were leaving user reviews on the Blu-Ray set.. it would make more sense but who can so many people on this site be so happy with such mediocrity?

Why even rent it? If its as bad as you say its is, why rent it? If Warner screwed it up so bad and you want to make a statement, why rent it? You should ask yourself that question.

Granted I'm not defending the use of DNR at all, and I actually HATE and DESPISE the practice, especially for fans of Blu-ray and film. On the other hand, as I have expressed on other occasions, my eyes arent as great as most others on here so a lot of times I cannot see it unless I'm looking directly at screens that some have posted on the forum boards. BUT, I'm just saying, for freebies (basically) I'll take them and watch them because they are better than the DVD, I'm sure about that.

Blockbuster or other rental chains will purchase copies despite whether I rent it or not. If I actually order it online to buy, I am voting with my dollars. Hoping Redbox will have BluBox ready soon...

Because they're three of my favorite films of all time, maybe behind the original Star Wars trilogy, and I want to see how they look and sound on my setup - at least once.

I'm hoping I'm making a difference by not buying it - I had it preordered before. It's a fraction of a fraction of a drop in the bucket I know, but if enough people do it it adds up.

It's not like I'm about to go make a sandwich sign and stand outside of WB central, I'm just disappointed that they botched it and because of it I won't buy it - I'll rent it instead. I'm hoping they fix it. I did the exact same thing with Gladiator.

Apparently this is a revolutionary, outrageous stance.

Maybe because we haven't actually seen them yet. Oh, and throw in the fact that the "proper" reviews are overwhelmingly positive...

I have yet to see any movie, ever, with screens caps that lackluster that somehow magically looked great in motion and I've been doing A/V for longer than I can remember. Those are frames of the movie itself, those are the movie. If those are screens of the movie on BD, and they are, and are representative of the movie, and they are, it just doesn't look all that great.

Fair enough. I am sure the posts will come flooding in when we all have it.

I hold thedigitalbits' opinion much higher than some faceless stranger called Stinky-Dinkins on some forum on the internet. Ken Brown even came on specifically in an attempt to quell the uninformed rubbish being spouted, stating very clearly that "I'm still in the early stages of my analysis, but DNR isn't a significant factor (if one at all), the image is quite crisp". Why do you seem to ignore such points, in favour of trusting a bunch of screencaps?

You're over-reacting, to the point that I can smell the desperation through my computer screen. Why not just wait and see?

Because screen caps are images taken direct from the video stream, while someone's opinions are someone's opinions
i have full confidence in my eyeballs.
