I don't think you can say someone is more or less of a fan because of which cut they prefer and to say otherwise is ignorant and/or condescending. Me, I'll get these for now and grab the Hobbit when it's part of the final 5 movie set. I'll sell these 3 to Hastings right before that set hits to help cushion the blow.

I will repeat, shipping is $9.95 (for standard) outside of Canada, making this $59.97. $4 dollars cheaper but 2+ weeks longer shipping.

Legolas: Hurry, LOTR Theatrical editions have hit the store shelves.

Aragorn: .......

Legolas: You mean not to buy them? =(

Aragorn: LOTR Theatrical editions' fate is no longer in our hands.

Gimli: Then it has all been in vain. LOTR bluray has failed to deliver great PQ.

Aragorn: Not if we hold true to each other.
[pause]

Aragorn: We will not abandon LOTR Extended editions bluray to torment and death.
Not while we have strength left. Leave all that can be spared behind. We travel light. Let's hunt some Warner bros. staff.

Gimli: YES!

Very interesting, thanks for posting. One can see very well, there is more actual high frequency detail in the TTT caps.

I repeat myself by saying, imo FotR will probably be very disappointing as far as pq is concerned. I'd wager to say that on large screens with close seating distances, FotR will be a rather sad viewing experience for videophiles with high expectations. I would be very surprised, if the actual BD in motion reveals to be much better than the screencaps suggest and don't expect it. I'd also guess that with increased seating distances, this will look "better than DVD" and you can "enjoy the film", just as you can with 720p material or upscaled DVDs.

What will be interesting now should be the explanation of what really happened here and why FotR looks like it does.

Also i think i will actually be pleased with TTT and RotK and starting to think, i might buy the set instead of just renting it. I will use an old amirism and say, they'll probably be "good enough" for me.

Personally i don't think the caps from these two films look as bad as some comments suggest. What is commonly referred to as 'DNR' doesn't bother me to the point, that i won't enjoy a movie or totally discard the pq. I'm would be much more bothered by the edgy, digital look that oversharpening produces. But that is just my personal opinion.

Here's another review, he is quite devastated by the transfer.

He even listed his "review system".
"Panasonic BD-60 Blu-Ray Player"
"Calibrated Epson 6100 Projector onto 120" screen"
I see in this review that they say there are only 5 discrete channels for this release versus the 6 that is displayed on the box and with what we have been told....so I assume they are replicating the 2 surround channels into the single rear and simply calling this 6.1? I find that misleading, and disappointing if true.......

Those screencap comparisons between FOTR and TTT certainly highlight there is a big difference in terms of actual detail. As for the colour timing, I believe that's how they compared originally.
All three films visually have a slightly different look to them. I don't think the colour differences we're seeing here are anything new.

Have to say that those FOTR screengrabs don't look anywhere near as bad as the ones posted by that eric guy from the beginning of the movie at Bag End. What gives? Check out Gandalf's beard on those grabs compared to these????

I think you are comparing apples to oranges there. The beginning of the movie may just have more DNR than the middle, it isn't consistent.

Default This is one movie i would double dip for

That's right... I'm looking forward to this release. There are not many movies I would double dip for... but this is one that is meant for High Def... been waiting a long time.... and have also been holding off the urge to watch the movies for a while in anticipation for this release.
As far as Extended versions.... looking forward to the day they are released. there have been times when I would rather watch the Theatrical versions because timewise, it is more convenient... however, the extended versions rule...
So whine all you want about Warner Brothers.... and them squeezing every dollar out of you that they possibly could.... I'm sure that if you were in their shoes... you would do the exact.... same.... thing...

Nothing changes for me actually now. They are catalogs and I rent almost all I'm considering to purchase, do comparisions with SD DVDs, see how I feel overall, and then decide.

Sure I'm going to be disappointed as most are. I had rather high expectations and considered buying them early without any feedback beforehand. Well that has changed and it was going against the way I handle catalogs to begin with so shame on me for being over optimistic! I guess that is scary considering how many catalogs we've seen that could have been handled better and I'm sure I don't have to remind many folks that some were quite high profile titles!

Because the amount of fine detail scrubbed away by DNR will fluctuate througout the entire movie, just like in any bad DNR example. Think of Gladiator, some sections were so bad things were erased from frames entirely.

By the way, Eric posted these as well.

That Eric guy? Are you trying to provoke "Stinky And The Gang"? You should trust Eric without fail. His motives are always pure and he never, NEVER makes mistakes.

hmmm next!
So in other words: If one reviewer pans a BD and another says good things about it, the reviewer giving the good review is obviously a sell-out.

By that logic, the book reviewers who liked Lord of the Rings when they came out as books were sell-outs, while the book reviewers who hated it were honest and trustworthy.

I'd double dip. But then again, my money is going else where right now. No time for Blu-rays at the moment.

Aren't there multiple reviews out on this now? The German one or whatever it was states it's bad.... but the score doesn't reflect that....

It is puzzling why someone would say the video is a "4" or whatever, (17.5 in Digital Bits' case) and then discuss the many noticeable problems they had with the transfer.......

He takes screen caps of blu-rays, it's not rocket science.

And you can't mistakenly add DNR to screen caps LOL.
