Not according to professionals in the industry.

Absolutely.

The fact is there is DNR in all 3 films. TTT and RotK to a lesser extent, but it is still there. That is not debatable at this point.

What is debatable is how much this bothers you and ALL opinions are valid as far as this goes. There are many factors that can contribute to this which is important to point out such as screen size, seating distance, how much you scrutinize, knowing what to look for, etc...........Anyone who has a passion for video quality will be bothered by this to some degree though since the fact remains that these could and should look better. For many of us, this is unnacceptable and especially on a bigger screen with a shorter seating distance, things like DNR, EE, etc..... can be VERY distracting in light of how good these could have looked. Combine that with the fact of how much most of us in here love these movies and it is extremely disappointing for many of us.

My big hope in all this discussion is that the EEs get the proper treatment since I do plan on buying those. These kind of threads have helped in the past and just hope we can have some influence/impact on the outcome of the EEs since it seems to be too late for these TEs unless they do a re-release which is HIGHLY unlikely IMO, at least not for many years

I have two questions.

1. Are you eric.exe from AVS or another user? (not that it really matters)
2. Can you put up shots of the best of FOTR and the worst of FOTR? I guess I'm not sure if the pics you and eric.exe are posting are the worst scenes or just random. Also, how do we know that other parts are not better?

I think that would be cool to see both the best pics and worst. Thanks!

The fact that you think those screens could have possibly come from the DVD's speaks volumes about the quality of this BD release.

Those are from the BD, and they are accurate.

The DVD's look much, much worse. They always looked pretty bad, even back in the day. Even as lackluster as this BD transfer is it still trounces the DVD.

Oh and as for best and worst pq scenes, well the felowship is pretty much consistently soft smoothed out looking, the two towers is better but has detail lacking dnr applied throughout on and off and their is a brief horrible night scene with a lot of digital noise! and the return of the king is better than the other two with less dnr but it dnr is still used a lot. the random scrren grabs I posted already have some of the better with worst in them.

So is it really DNR, or just soft looking? There's a difference.

I take Bill Hunts word over Eric.exe.
We will have to see with our own eyes, and see who's right.
One thing I'm sure, this is the best the movies have ever looked, and I already know what I'm doing April 6th.

I know I am looking at this from a different viewpoint (glass half full), but what I see in these images is the result of $300,000,000 and many years of labor by thousands of people to produce. Could they be better? Probably. But they sure look good to me, and I am thankful for their existence.

Please give me the name of a bluray that looked terrible in screen caps but turned out to be fantastic when in motion.

Well, that's what you say. I don't see any, at least not of the Patton/The Longest Day/Star Trek kind. Added to that the fact that Peter Jackson approved these, I don't think these look that bad at all.

There should be film grain in the image. Also Bilbo's face has a waxy appearance in the latter pic.

I guess this is where it gets subjective as to how much DNR bothers you..........those shots look terrible IMO........waxy faces, lacking detail, soft, etc........yuck!

I will take Erics and Daves word over Bills since both of those guys opinions match what I am seeing in these screen caps, both are giving fantastic examples to support their claims and I feel these guys are calling it like it is much more than Bill in this case, sorry. Its painfully obvious to my eyes and IMO.
