Extended editions are masterpieces especially FOTR. Theatricals are not bad but I always prefer EE.

I like the review and I haven't changed my mind at all. I will still get this set next month and then unload it before the better 5 movie set comes out.

I have never seen these movies because i am more of a sci-fi than fantasy person but i figured i would look into them because of how many people love them. I figured first thing is to see what all the fuss about these not being extend editions was about. I checked IMDB and instead of the 10-15 minutes a extended edition normally adds i find out these movies come out to 3-4 hours long a piece. I am now thinking i may end up renting the theatricals because i am not sure as great as it may be if i can sit through a 4 hour movie.

Well, I've heard the director prefers the theatrical versions, so keep that in mind. Movies are edited for a reason, if you want the whole LOTR read the books

According to the BDInfo scan provided at the hometheatershack.com review, it appears to be 5.1 discrete with DTS-ES matrixed channels on both the core and HD extensions.

It's definitely disappointing but at least it's not a total disaster. Still, hard to believe they didn't put more effort into such beloved movies.

Oh well, I'm still excited to get them but not nearly as much as I was.

So does that mean my AVR will matrix it to 7.1 if I have my back surrounds set to "dual" instead of "single"?

Very well written review.

First sentence made me sad:

Has it really been nine years? I could hardly believe it myself, but nearly a decade has passed...

It makes no sense to me that Fellowship is nearly a decade old. I try to consider it, and it confuses me. Same with movies like the first Matrix.... it feels like I went to the theater to see them no more than 3 or 4 friggin' years ago.

Father time, you sonofa*****!

Yup, feels like it was just yesterday that I piled into the car to see the first movie. I STILL remember that a lot of people booed the way it ended, I guess they didn't realize there were 2 more movies.

Let's not be so quick to blame Warner, this transfer was overseen by Peter Jackson and I imagine New Line had some say as well. In the end, FoTR will probably never look that incredible on blu-ray but at least now we have it in HD and the sound is insanely good.

Well I was considering buying this edition and not wait for the EE but with this review, I'm pretty sure I'm not going to purchase it.

How come the video transfer can't be 5 star?! They do it with old movies but for one of the most anticipated release on BR, with maybe Star Wars with it, they **** it up!

It's the Gladiator syndrom.

First movie 2.5/5, next two 4/5. Can't say I'm too surprised, honestly these movies never even made for solid DVDs. Holding out hope the inevitable 5 film set will give us some reprieve.

I appreciate Ken Brown not inflating the video rating for Fellowship because it's a great film like many reviews do. The PQ standard should be elevated, not lowered, for movies like this... especially when they've been delaying the release for so long, you'd think they'd be getting the filmmakers to spend some time in a DI facility
