when the EE comes outs will there be an option to watch the theatrical version on the disks?

just asking cuz i cant see myself sitting through roughly 4 hours for a movie that I've seen many times on dvd already

One of the most beloved trilogies of all time... all in the hands of inept studio that produces sub par Blu-Ray transfers. What a joke.

Well they don't produce only sub-par Blu-Rays.

The Dark Knight for example isn't what I'll call a sub-par Blu-Ray or How the West Was Won, or North by Northwest.

It's just a sad money issue, kind of like Gladiator.

Except even more here since they will release it again with extended editions and/or with the 5 movie set

I'll still be getting this set. At any rate, the PQ and AQ still beats the pants off any standard dvd release, even with FOTR. I've long since offloaded my theatrical edition DVDs so this will be nice to have.

Honestly, I was hoping for the best, and expecting the worst. Warner has always been problematic with their transfers. Unless it's a new release, digibook edition, or ceritified classic ala The Wizard of Oz or Gone with the Wind (even though LOTR should be considered as such), they go on auto-pilot with their transfers. Yeah, it's disappointing but two out of three aint bad. Warner is not in the same league as Paramount, Sony, or Criterion. I love the films and even though they didn't get the 5 star treatment they deserved, I imagine the Extended Editions at the very least will get the proper care. Who knows, maybe we'll get a remastered edition ala Gangs of New York or Gladiator.

Bottom line, I'm still getting my set, and proud of it.

Blame New Line for being an even more piss poor studio that went bankrupt and had to merge with WB. WB is a great studio, but like I said, unless it's a new release, digibook edition, or certified classic ala Casablanca, Wizard of Oz, or Gone with the Wind, they go on auto-pilot for their catalog titles, especially the ones they know will sell tons anyways.

Well yeah that's what I say! But I can't understand your reasoning: You're like: they'll probably do another transfer like for Gladiator or Gangs, but you're still going to purchase it!

Well it's your money but if everybody acts like that they'll continue screwing consumers!

I'm not saying I'm not going to buy this edition ever, but I'll wait AT LEAST for a price drop, like they did with Gladiator when they saw that people weren't that dumb!

All in all I'll wait for a new transfer or a low price on this set, because it doesn't deserve paying the price of new movies if not remastered.

Lord of the Rings is the only reason they didn't go bankrupt earlier, I'd imagine. Jackson had to knock on a lot of doors before little studio New Line Cinema said yes and I am eternally grateful they did.

Sorry about that. We were actually in the process of deciding how to list the audio track in our database. I should have probably held my review back for another hour until I worked it out

PQ score is around what the Star Trek: Next Generation blu-ray movie set got and I was okay with those. Just placed my pre-order, can't wait to watch this on blu-ray.

The fact that everyone is saying they'll buy the worthless transfers and then double dip for better ones later is the reason this set looks the way it does. You guys are going to take it up the rear while they laugh all the way to the bank.

You should leave these on the shelf, where they belong.

I don't know if they'll do a remaster. It really boils down to my love for the films outweighing my need for a mind-blowing transfer. Looking at the screens on this site, I see that TTT and ROTK look fantastic, while FOTR has obvious issues. But from what I can tell, when it looks good, it looks really great, ala the screencap of the fellowship leaving Rivendell. In any case, it still looks a hell of a lot better than the dvd editions, which is all I've ever seen, so as a casual buyer but vocal champion of the blu-ray format, I'm pretty satisfied. If I hadn't just gotten a paycheck recently, I would have held back. But like I said, my love for these films blinds me a little and softens the blow. I know that's not the popular way to think about it, but it's just how I roll. These are the films that inspired me to become a screenwriter and director. Buying a problematic yet significant enough upgrade is inevitable for me

No joke. New Line used to produce some great stuff, like Magnolia and Boogie Nights. And I'll always be eternally grateful that they had the balls to back up Peter Jackson when no one else would. But they shot themselves in the foot with really sub-par films most of the time. That LOTR money was only going to last so long.

What "matrixed" means is that, if you had a 6.1 setup, for this movie, when listening to the DTS HD MA encoded track, the back center channel (the 6th speaker) is not a unique track. Instead, the 6 the track is a mix from the left and right surrounds.

If you have a 5.1 AVR, it will be decoded as 5.1 but if you have a 6.1 AVR, it will be decoded as 6.1. If you have a 7.1 receiver, both the rear surround speakers will get the same track.

^found the answer to my question on another site, so for anyone wanting to know...if you have a 7.1 setup you WILL get sounds out of all 8-channels however it's not discrete like most of the titles from Lionsgate for example.

The Dark Knight only had a few issues with color contrast. Other than that, it was reference-grade PQ and AQ.

Re, in my humble opinion in this case the only reasonable thing to do is keeping your money in your wallet, now it's time to boycott majors studios everytime they take consumers for brain-damaged persons!

why do you say that, when that is not true? those screencaps can be trusted.. the first blu ray release of Gangs of New York was terrible.

He was being sarcastic.

I didn't notice any DNR or EE in the TDK disc. Maybe my tv isn't uber amazing enough to spot these things, or maybe I don't have a good eye for specifics and don't know what to really look for. I tend to be a glass-half full kinda person when it comes to stuff like this.
